WELCOME TO THE MUSIC  ROOM!

Welcome to the Music Room at North Stonington Elementary School.

Happy New Year!

Our 5th grade, second year band students and 5th Grade Chorus performed a spectacular concert on December 15th.  Both groups demonstrated excellent stage presence and all students performed with professionalism. Great job everyone!

Chorus rehearsals will resume on Tuesday, January 10th.  We will begin learning music for our Spring Chorus Concert which will be held on May 31, 2012.

All students did a great job at our Holiday Sing-A-Long held on Dec. 23rd.  Music classes worked very hard on preparing songs for this assembly.  All students in grades Pre K-5 learned how to stand in performance position and how to present themselves when performing for an audience.

The State of Connecticut Music Standards addressed, when learning music for our assemblies and performances include the following:

 -  Sing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of songs.

 -  Read and notate music.

 -  Listen to, describe and analyze music. -   Evaluate music and music performances. -

 -   Understand music in relation to history and culture.

As we begin the new year, classes will continue to learn music notation, both rhythmically and by learning the notes of the treble staff.  Third grade classes will begin learning to play the recorder.  Grade 4 and 5 classes will begin an extended unit on handchime ringing, which will be incorporated into our Spring Concerts.  All classes will focus on listening to various styles of music by choral and instrumental ensembles.

Handchimes are musical bars in the shape of a tuning fork which have a clapper like a bell.  The ringer holds the bar and then moves it so the clapper strikes the chime, which has a beautiful tone.  Students will learn to play the 3 octave range of chimes.  There are 37 chimes per set.

NOTICE OF A COMMUNITY THEATER OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES K-5

OPEN AUDITIONS

Missoula Childrens Theater

Audition is Open to all students in grades K‐5

& ISAAC students

at ISAAC, 190 Governor Winthrop Blvd. New London

One week only—audition to performance!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The open audition for the Missoula Children's Theatre production of The Secret Garden will be held on Monday, January 30, 2012 at 4:00 at ISAAC. There are roles for any area students Kindergarten through grade 5, and for ISAAC students grades 6 through 8. Approximately 50‐60 local students will be cast to appear in the show with the MCT Tour Actor/Director. While participation is FREE, there is no guarantee that everyone who auditions will be cast in the play. Students wishing to audition must arrive by the scheduled starting time and stay for the entire two‐hour session. The first rehearsal (for some) begins approximately 15‐30 minutes after the audition. All other students not rehearsing after the audition will be dismissed for the day.

This is a group audition ‐ no advance preparation is necessary, but a smile never hurts. Students should just be ready to come and have a good time!

Rehearsals will be conducted every day from 4:00 to 8:30 at ISAAC. Although not all cast members will be needed at every session, those auditioning must have a clear schedule for the entire week and if selected, be able to attend all rehearsals required for their role. A detailed rehearsal schedule will be distributed at the conclusion of the audition. Cast members scheduled for the full 4½ hours of rehearsal will be asked to bring a bag dinner or snack.

The performances will be held on February 4, 2012 at 11:00 and 2:00 and will be presented at ISAAC. The students in the cast will be called for dress rehearsal before the performance that day. All those cast must be available for all scheduled performances.

The Missoula Children's Theatre is a non‐profit organization based in Missoula, Montana. This coming year more than 65,000 cast members across the globe will take to the stage to the delight and applause of their families, friends, community, neighbors and teachers! The residency at ISAAC is made possible by the Kitchings Foundation with help from the Griffis Art Center.

Sincerely,

Kate Fioravanti

ISAAC Director of Performing Arts
