CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES

Students in music classes continue to focus on reading rhythm patterns. We are learning the names of notes and their values based on 4/4 time: Grades K-2 says the rhythm and Grades 3-5 are learning to count the rhythms:

·         Whole note/rest = 4 beats - Say "Whole-note-hold-it"

·         Half note/rest = 2 beat - Say "Half-note"

·         Quarter note/rest = 1 beat - Say "Ta"

·          Eighth notes = 1/2 beat

·         2 Eighth notes = 1 beat and we say "Ti-Ti"

·         A new note we have learned is a dotted half note = 3 beats

Grades Pre K to Kindergarten

The Pre-K and Kindergarten classes are learning how to identify loud and soft (quiet) sounds. The kindergarteners know the musical word for loud (forte) and the musical word for soft (piano).

Kindergarten classes are learning songs and dialogues for a musical show to be presented called "When I Grow Up". The musical includes songs about the many things one could be when they grow up.

…………………………………………………..
Grade 3

Grade three classes continue to learn notes from the treble clef staff along with rhythms using whole, half, quarter and eighth notes. We are just beginning to combine those concepts into our recorder playing.  We are now learning to perform the songs: “Hot Cross Buns”, “Merrily We Roll Along” and “Baggie Boogie Woogie”, which is a really jazzy tune!

We are learning music from a mini-musical called “Let’s Pass It On!”. This show connects with our P.B.I.S. school-wide initiative. Students will present in dialogue and song about how showing kindness and respect will get one ahead in life.    Deatils are below about our performance on May 10th.

Grade 4
Fourth graders are also learning staff and musical notation. We are learning how to follow a vocal and lyric score as we learn music from a musical called “Positive”.  This production also reinforces our P.B.I.S. school-wide program of being positive.  Students will present some very “cool” music which will help us to remember to be positive, have good thoughts, and to be kind to name a few.

Grade 4 students have also been introduced to our handchimes. These instruments are metal bars that have a clapper like a bell and when rung make a beautiful tone.  These will be featured in our Spring Concert.   Deatils are below about our performance on May 10th.

Grade 5

Students in grade 5 continue to develop musical skills and are becoming aware of musical symbols and how they relate to a piece of music. We are developing critical listening skills as we listen to musical selections and identify concepts such as: style, dynamics, tempo, and instruments heard. We are also learning selections from a musical called “For Which it Stands”.  This production features music from a historical perspective and students will sing and speak of some of the key landmarks in the U.S.A.  Grade 5 students will also present music on the handchimes.  Details are below about our performance on May 10th.
