Genetics & Heredity

allele - a trait that makes up a gene pair

dominant trait - a trait that always shows itself.  Always represented by a capital leter. (G)

recessive trait  - a trait that is hidden.  It only shows itself it both alleles are recessive.  Represented by a lower case letter.(g)

homozygous - when both alleles are the same:  GG, gg

heterozygous

(also known as hybrid) - when there is one dominant and one recessive allele:    Gg

offspring - the product of two parents reproducing

Gregor Mendel - Scientist who pioneered heredity by experimenting with pea plants

Punnett Square - A tool used to determine the probability that offspring will have certain traits passed on from their parentsA typical Punnett Square

Genotype - The percentage of the offspring having a specific gene pair. The genotype of the Punnett Square above is as follows:

GG - 1/4 = 25%

Gg - 2/4 = 50%

gg - 1/4 = 25%

Phenotype - The percentage of the offspring having a specific physical characteristic trait.  The phenotypes of the Punnett Square above is as follows:

Green peas (homozygous dominant and heterozygous) = 75%

Yellow peas (homozygous recessive) = 25%

 TAXONOMY PROJECT:

Pick any organism.

At top of page you are going to put the english name of the organism, for example, HUMAN BEING

Also at top of page, list the scientific name in Latin

Below this put a picture of your organism

Below the picture put the upside down taxonomic pyramid with the 7 classifications.

On back put a short paragraph about the adaptations of the organism, and some brief facts about the organism.

DUE TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 23rd.
