7th Grade News

Students should be reading a minimum of twenty minutes each night and recording the information in a reading log.  This is to help increase their reading comprehension.

Our emphasis in Language Arts is in reading and writing.  This year students will have two writing tasks where they will respond to a prompt or situation (this is on-demand writing).  Students will focus on persuasive or argumentative writing.  There will be two content specific writing assignments that will tie in with another subject.

This semester our focus is on research.  We are studying the "Big 6" Research Process.  Students will be able to use these skills on their Mythology Research Project.  Students will research and write a report on a mythological character.  Students will have to come up with a creative way to present their character to the class. To view the "Big 6" Presentation scroll down to the bottom and click on download (Big 6).

First semester we read "Seventh Grade" by Gary Soto, "Thank You Ma'am" by Langston Hughes and "Names Nobres" by Judy Alverez and several other short stories and essays.  Students recently were able to read and understand "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe.  In early November we will read"The Monsters are Due on Maple Street", which is a teleplay written by Rod Serling for The Twilight Zone.

We will focus on many writing assignments such as character diaries of characters from the selections that we have read, story boards, reflection papers, narrative essays and of course, grammar and punctuation practice.

Students will have the opportunity to create Bio Poem about themselves and to write  class poems, alternate endings and short stories.  Every day students are responsible for writing about the journal prompt in their writer's notebooks.  We are focusing heavily on vocabulary to help students learn to determine the meanings of words through context clues, word parts and word association.
