The class will read the novel “The Cay”.  Using whole class instruction we will begin with vocabulary—which will be from the novel—phonics, and word attack skills.  The reading strand will be taught, practiced and reinforced while reading the daily passages.  In Language Arts, students will write a summary of the passages covered while working on their spelling, grammar and parts of speech.  Geography will be covered in the same way.  By learning about where the story takes place, students will learn absolute location, longitude and latitude, cardinal directions, landforms, as well as the people who live in the region. For Science, we will use the events of this story as a frame work for learning the skills required; such as weather events.  In Math, we will calculate things such as; the period of time the characters are lost and the distance they traveled as a means to improve their math skills.
