Drawing and Painting

 

Course Description:

Drawing and Painting is an intermediate level 2 course required for advanced art courses. Students will focus on 20th century and contemporary styles and individual artists. Students will expand their understanding of content, develop sophisticated compositional skills and experiment with a variety of materials, techniques and processes. 

 

Course Goals

1. Students will refine their understanding of professional and cultural opportunities as well as opportunities for personal expression in art.

2. Students will become familiar with the history of art and artists from the 20th century and an appreciation for contemporary painting styles.

3. Students will develop a personal approach and preference for composition (elements and principles), materials, techniques and processes in the making of art.

4. Students will develop a personal approach for content and meaning in art.

5. Students will develop the necessary skills for Portfolio Preparation.

6. Students will develop their work through series and experimentation.

7. Students will become proficient in one drawing and one painting media.

 

Course Objectives

The Art Department uses a Comprehensive Art Education structure for instruction that divides art into four distinct disciplines: Art History, Art Production, Art Criticism and Aesthetics.

 

Art history: Students will identify a variety of 20th century, modern and contemporary art styles and individual artists.

 

Art production: Students will complete projects in a variety of drawing and painting materials; explore drawing and  painting techniques; learn about art styles such as expressionism: explore art approaches such as abstraction, nonobjective, post-modernism, and realism; complete works with sophisticated compositions based on the elements of art and principles of design. Students will develop a greater understanding of color theory and paint mixing.

 

Art criticism: Students will refine the process of responding to art and develop their higher order thinking skills through analysis, interpretation and evaluation of artwork.. Students will become proficient in the use of art vocabulary.

 

Aesthetics: Students will examine the nature of art, why cultures produce art, and the meaning of art to human kind.

Field Trips and guest speakers

The Art Department sponsors at least one student funded field trip per year and invites a number of guest speakers to give presentations during the first half of the year.

 

Art Mural Club

Students are invited to work on mural projects after school. This year we will complete the last two panels of a four panel work, ‘The four seasons’.
