Rocks 2 Rock 'N Roll World History "Crash Course" Does History Repeat Itself ?
Matt L. DOES HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF? From what I have read, learned and discussed with my family, I believe history does repeat itself. There are many examples of ways that we have seen history repeat itself both in other parts of the world, and in the United States. For example, the sinking of the Lusitania, Pearl Harbor, and the 911 attack are all similar historical events. These unprovoked attacks on U.S. citizens forced the United States into World War I and II, and the current War on Terror. The sinking of the Lusitania was on May 7th 1915. The Lusitania was a merchant ship not a warship, but it was surprise attacked and sunk. 1,153 passengers and crew drowned. (History Learning Site, 2000-2010) This event brought us into World War I. Then Pearl Harbor, which was an American Naval base located in Hawaii, was surprised attacked by the empire of Japan on the morning of December 7th 1941. Without warning the Japanese attacked the base early in the morning while the base was sleeping, and 2,304 were killed. (Beckett, 1988) This event brought the United States of America into World War II. On the Morning of September 11th 2001, the World Trade Towers in New York City were savagely attacked. Al-Qaeda-affiliated extremists, hijacked passenger planes and flew them into the World Trade Center which resulted in 2,752 deaths. (Wikipedia, 2010) This event brought us into the current War on Terror. All of the above show examples of history repeating itself and bringing the United States into war. United States citizens were attacked, killed and forced into war. Two additional examples of history repeating itself in other areas of the world are: Germany fighting in World War I going in two directions (East and West), making it a two front war. After Hitler was advised that this was not a good idea, he went into World War II and fought a 2 fronted war again. This proved to be aggressive and an advantage to the allied victories. As we know, because of this formerly unsuccessful strategy, Hitler failed and Germany lost again. The other example is the rise and fall of all the great past world empires; such as, Rome, Egyptian and Greek. As we have been studying in class, all were great empires, super powers of their time. However, they all eventually failed because of, greed, jealousy and weak leadership. A common link between all of these wars that we see over and over again is leaders not learning from past mistakes. Like the saying, “Those who don’t learn from the past are doomed to repeat it,” and I believe this is true. Beckett, I. (1988). Illustrated History of World War II. New York: Crown Publishers. Andrew V. I voted for linear because the world is ever changing and everything is advancing whether it is technology or the human population. No two events will ever happen repeatedly on and off for the rest of human existence like circular. And events haven’t happened similarly because of our emotions like spiral. Events have also gotten more advanced and complex then ever before. They used to use spears, arrows, and horses with chariots. Now we use machine guns, snipes, and nearly indestructible tanks and armored vehicles. And events will keep getting more deadly and innovative until the end of our existence. But not just war related also events like government related things. Like the protection of the president. Now it is nearly impossible to assonate our president. With the secret service and his nearly indestructible car the highly protected white house and if he is going long distances Air Force One which is the presidents huge plane and sometimes protected by fighter pilot escorts. The events will always be different and never the same and that is why I chose linear and not circular or spiral.
