Letters from Wolfie

Novel Activities

1. Limericks – Mark likes to write limericks to express his feelings about Wolfie. Write 4 limericks from 4 different character’s points of view using topics you imagine each would write about.

    • Limericks are a form of poetry and consist of five lines. Lines 1, 2, and 5 of Limericks have seven to ten syllables and rhyme with one another. Lines 3 and 4 of Limericks have five to seven syllables and also rhyme with each other.

2. Persuasive Letter – Mark wrote a letter to the government requesting Wolfie be returned after his service. You probably have a good idea of what exactly was in that letter. Your job is to write a letter to army officials as Mark asking for the return of Wolfie after his tour of duty.

    • Include why Wolfie is so important to you
    • Share short stories about Wolfie (use from the story or make them up)
    • Business letter format

 3. Portraits of Danny – Mark’s brother is a great example of a dynamic character. He changes a lot during the novel.

    • Draw (and color) a detailed picture of Danny before he goes off to Vietnam and include a paragraph describing his physical and emotional character traits.
    • Draw (and color) a detailed picture of Danny after he returns from Vietnam and include a paragraph describing his physical and emotional character traits.

All projects must:

    • follow the guidelines above (10 pts.)
    • show understanding of the plot, characters, and themes (10 pts.)
