READING
(for all subjects!)

12 Powerful Words (Larry Bell)
This is a powerful test taking strategy. These words prepare students to do better on tests by explaining to them in terms they can understand what the different types of questions mean.  Please ask your child about these words and have them act them out for you as well.

1.  Trace - Outline, list in steps, or follow the path
2.  Analyze - Break it into parts, tell about the parts
3.  Infer - Read between the lines, what is the hidden meaning
4.  Evaluate - Judge it, tell the good and the bad
5.  Formulate - Create, put together
6.  Describe - Tell about, paint a picture with words
7.  Support - Back it up or prove it with details
8.  Explain - Teach me or show me, tell me the steps
9.  Summarize - Tell the main idea, tell the beginning, middle, and end
10.  Compare - Tell all the ways they are the same
11.  Contrast - Tell all the ways they are different
12.  Predict - What will happen next?

UNRAAVEL - This is another strategy from Larry Bell.  Students are expected to be able to spell UNRAAVEL as well as write down what each letter stands for.  We will be practicing how to use this strategy in class to learn how to UNRAAVEL reading passages.  When students apply this strategy, they are more likely to be more successful at finding the correct answer on tests in class, as well as standardized tests such as the EOG's.

U - Underline the passage
N - Now predict the passage
R - Run through and number paragraphs
A - Are you reading the questions
A - Are the important words circled? (Write down their meaning.)
V - Venture (read) through the passage
E - Eliminate the obviously wrong answers.
L - Let the questions be answered and write the paragraph # where you found the answers next to the question

Spelling

Check your child's agenda for the current spelling list. Please aid him/her in spelling the words. Thanks so much!
Students can go to
 http://www.spellingcity.com
to find their list and practice words with games!
Once on the site, students find me - Dee Thompson to access our weekly list.

Wordly Wise Vocabulary - all students work in this book weekly and we test after we finish a lesson. (no set time as things often come up which prevent our study daily. Students should be bringing home their books to study words and definitions - be able to match the word with definition and/or use the words correctly in sentences that will be on the test. We check work in class and review, but extra study time at home is a must for success. Thanks!

Language Arts

Writing
Narratives - personal and imaginative
Cursive writing! :)
Math
Students should know all multiplication facts 0 - 12! We have timed (3 and a half min.) daily tests
- if he/she is studying daily, he/she will not need all the time given! Students should know these like they know their names, lyrics to songs, etc. :) Thanks for your daily support in this!
