May 28th - June 1st, 2012 - News from K-B A Peek into Our Classroom
In ELA (English Language Arts), we have finished Unit 5 and will be reviewing and completing our Unit 5 Test. Please continue to work with your child when reading to sound out simple words. In school we use our fingertaps for the letter sounds. Using all the sounds we have learned so far, we should be able to sound out and blend some new words. This helps with reading and writing! We will review all of the sight words. Please continue working with all the previous sounds and sight words at home as well. We will also continue to write sentences - using correct word order and looking at nouns and verbs and even adjectives in sentences. We will be busy writing using all that we have learned! We are getting so SMART! Be a "reading detective"! When you read books with your child, have them look for our "special" (sight) words - especially in the little booklets they bring home. Look for words with /m/, /t/, /a/, /s/./p/, c as /k/, /b/, /n/, /i/, /r/, /d/,/k/, /f/,/h/,/o/, /l/,/g/,/j/, /w/, /x/, /e/, /v/, /z/, /q/, /y/ and /u/. Work on sounding out simple words like mat, fit, hop, set and rug...The class is getting so excited...they are making the connections and beginning to read!!
In Math, this week, we will continue the unit on Measurement. We have had fun putting our friends in size order, measuring things in the classroom with cubes and talking about capacity at the lemonade stand. Please continue to practice writing the numbers (the correct way) and practicing adding and subtracting (real life examples are great!), so your child can easily write math problems and answers.
In Religion, we are learning that Jesus is our Friend. He is always there for us! We will complete the fun science activities for each of the senses as well (we got a little behind with all of the Kindergarten practices). We have truly enjoyed each and every crown for Mary. We will continue crowning Mary each day with song and prayer, our own mini May procession.
Last chance...Please continue to review address and phone number with your child. We need to study and learn this important safety information. So far, many children have received a certificate for learning address and/or phone number! Great Job!! We should be finishing up soon. We have a few more to go!
This week we will not have a journal to write for homework. If you would like to practice sentences at home, your child can bring them in for a sticker. We are working on Kid Writing - so help your child listen to the sounds in words and write the sounds they hear. Please don't spell the words for your child. We need to see Kid Writing - not adult writing. Writing is an important skill that they will use so much in first grade - sentences for spelling and journal writing - as well as various writing assignments. We are practicing in school too, so we will become great authors! Thanks for all the great stories!!
The Reading Race is over! Keep reading though - it is so much fun!!! Turn in your reading sheets next week. We have several children who have already read 100 books (or more - our top reader read 447 books!)...some are very close. Time flies when you are having fun reading!!
