For 4th and 5th GRADERS there is going to be a test every 5 weeks. The first test will cover all the vocabulary that is in pink on the website. New students to Lakeland, do not worry just do the best you can based on what we have covered so far.

Hola mi nombre es Mrs. Riley and I will be the Spanish teacher for Kindergarten thru 5^th grade.

It is a pleasure and honor to be able to teach your child Spanish this year.   This is going to be my 9^th year teaching at LCA, the first 5 years I was the Spanish and Technology teacher.   The last three years I took a break and was just the Technology teacher, but this year I was asked to teach both Spanish and Technology again. 

I am originally from Mexico City and have a degree in Systems Administration Engineering. I have lived in Texas for sixteen years with my husband and daughters who are bilingual.

Class Overview:

I wanted to let know that Señora Valderas and I will be working together to help me with the transition to the methodology that is being used at LCA to teacher Spanish.   We will continue using the same curriculum that Señora Valderas was using last years. “SYMTALK”.

The SYMTALK method teaches students the fundamentals of the target language. Students lean how to substitute words for clear symbols. Resulting in communication beginning with the first lesson.  The vocabulary is recycled throughout the book, resulting in mastery the core vocabulary by the end of each level.  Verbs are introduced as lexical items, so that students learn conjugations naturally.  Also it will be introducing some extra vocabulary.

Each student will have a Spanish folder where they will put any papers that they made or used during class:

The Kindergarten, First and Second grades will keep the folder at the school   They will take home papers every 2 or 3 classes from the folder and it can be a good idea if you can have a Spanish folder at home to put all these papers and review with them to help reinforce what we are learning in class.

The Third, Fourth and Fifth grades will be able to take home the Spanish folder each week with the papers to study, but they need to be sure to bring it back each week for class.  This is because we will be using the material contained in the folder during each class.

To learn a second language it is important that the students are able practice the most they can during the week to be able to master the material.    It would be helpfully if you can print the vocabulary for your child and practice with them during the week, which can be found in their folder or on the above website.   If you need any help with the pronunciation of the words you can use the following link to help you hear the pronunciation: http://www.spanishdict.com/
