  Mrs. Baumann's Shining Stars

May 21-25, 2012

added on May 22:

Tomorrow (5-23) is flashlight reading day.  Remember to bring a flashlight, 1-2 books to read/share, a small pillow and/or stuffed animal.

Also, students may bring a game to share.  The game may be electronic as long as it is "kid-friendly".  Please make sure your child's name is on the game.

2nd grade sponsored

Cowboy Church Supply Round-Up

For those of you who may not know Cowboy Church (a church in our community) was destroyed by fire this month.  It is unfortunate that this has occurred, however; this is a great opportunity for us to serve.

At the end of the year, we often have school supplies left over.  These leftover supplies could assist the children’s ministry at Cowboy Church.  It’s really very easy!  If you would like your child’s additional supplies donated to help this church, please email me (tbaumann@lakelandbaptist.org) by Wednesday May 22.

If you are interested in purchasing supplies or have unused supplies at home, please label the items “Cowboy Church” and send them to school with your child.  The 2nd grade classrooms will also have bins for donated items.

Items needed:  crayons, markers, glue sticks, pencils, construction paper, colored pencils

We have moved the 2nd grade yearbook signing day to Thursday May 24.  2nd graders should bring their yearbook back on that day.

If you did not order a yearbook and would like one, please check with the school office starting on Tuesday morning (May 22).  The cost is $25.00.

For the last week of school, 2nd graders can accentuate their spirit dress as follows:

Monday – crazy or mixed up sock day

Tuesday – Hat day – wear a hat you already have or make your own at home to wear.  Students will not be allowed to share or trade hats at school.

Wednesday – Flashlight reading day – bring a flashlight and a few of your favorite books to read.  Also bring a beach towel, small pillow and stuffed animal to make you more comfortable while reading.  Make sure you have good batteries in your flashlight!

Thursday – Twin Day – dress like 1 or 2 of your friends (i.e. same hairstyle, same accessories, same shirt, same tie, same shoes, etc.)

Friday – Crazy hair day – make your hair look crazy with barrettes, ponytails, hair gel, etc.    This is always a big hit!

On Monday, May 21, Zoo University will come to LCA and talk to LCA 2nd graders from approximately 10:30 - 11:30 am.  I believe the Zoo University is bringing some furry (and not so furry friends) to show off.  Sounds like fun!!  Thank to Mr. & Mrs. Weir (Elizabeth's parents) for making this possible for 2nd grade.

End of year party will be on Friday, May 25 from 2:00 to 3:15 pm.  All parents are invited but per LCA policy siblings cannot attend (sorry).  School will be dismissed at 3:25pm.

I will be sending home each student's "tub" along with their schoolboxes Thursday, May 24.

Afterschool Clubs will not meet the last week of school (May 21-25).  Please make arrangements to pick-up your student at their regular dismissal time.

Spirit Dress

From May 17th to May 25th, students will be able to dress in "Spirit" dress.  Students must wear an LCA approved shirt and can wear either long denim blue jeans/capris or LCA approved bottoms.

Please be on time to class each day.  Our school day starts at 8:45 am

Student Absences

Thank you for letting me know ahead of time for planned student absences. It really helps me with planning and making sure that your child gets all the required make-up work.  If your will be staying home due to illness, please either call the LCA office or email me.  Thanks for your help!

Reading Logs

Keep writing those reading pages in your reading logs.  I do take a grade on them.  Each Friday I will check the students' reading log for that week.  If they read at least 30 pages they will receive a 100 for their reading log grade for the week.

If for some reason, you need to check your child out before 3:25, you MUST sign them out in the office.  Please be aware that once you come up to get your child, it may take them several minutes to get theirs backpack and folder ready to go.  Also, please email me or  send a note in your child's folder if you do need to pick them up early.  Thanks for your understanding in this matter.

Please make sure your child goes to the restroom before they come to school each morning.

If your child makes below 70 on any assignment, it will come home with a sign and return stamp on it.  Please sign it and return it to the school the next day.

Mystery State Guessing Game

I am going to list clues for the state(s) we will study for he week.  Students may guess the state(s) by writing the state name on a piece of paper.  Be sure to write your name on your paper.  Bring your guess to school the first day of the week.  If the student has the correct guess, I will reward them with one incentive sticker.  Below are the clues for this week's state(s):

State #1

Clue 1: This state was named after an English duke.

Clue 2: The first railroad in the United States was constructed in this state.

Clue 3: This state was home to our nation's capital before it was moved to Washington, D.C.

Clue 4: Five states -- Connecticut, Vermont, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania -- border this state.

Clue 5: You can find the Statue of Liberty in this state.

State #2

Clue 1: Motion pictures (movies) were invented in this state.

Clue 2: The first nearly complete dinosaur skeleton was found in this state in 1858.

Clue 3: This state was the first to ratify the U.S. Bill of Rights, in 1790.

Clue 4: This state is the most densely populated state in the United States.
