End of Year Notes

We have many special events happening this week and next!  Keep this note handy so that hopefully everyone will know what is happening!  No homework note will be sent this week or next week other than this one.  For this week and next, for homework, please read for 15 minutes each night.  Thanks.  Continue to review math facts.  No spelling test this week or next. I have attached a list of the Dolch Sight Words and First Grade High Frequency Spelling Words. Please review these now and over the summer. Most children know most/all of these lists. Just keep them up on them over summer.  No other homework will be sent.

v Last Friday was the last day to return school library books.  If your child still has library books out, please return them tomorrow. Call Mrs. Koors in nurses office if you have lost books and she will let you know the cost to replace the books. Also, please check around the house for ANY books that may belong to our classroom and return them. I will not be sending home book baggies/AR books any more after this week so that I may make sure everything is turned in for the year.  But…. Keep reading every night as usual.

v Tuesday, May 15:  We had our Pen Pal Picnic at Miami Whitewater Park at the Tanager Meadows Shelter Area.  Thanks for everyone who helped out. Your child received a writing packet with his/her pen pal’s address so that they may write to each other over the summer!

v Monday, May 21:  We begin our week of “cancer prevention tips.”  Today, shade out cancer. Wear sunglasses.  Chances for prizes will be sold for 25 cents all week in cafeteria. We will raffle prize baskets off on Relay for Life Day. Bring in those quarters for the Hope Highway for Relay Day as well. Our can is getting filled with quarters already!

v Tuesday, May 22:   “Put a cap on cancer”  Wear a hat or cap today.

v Wednesday, May 23Goodwill Games at Community Center. Pack a lunch, drink for lunch, water bottle for the day, wear play clothes with a red St. John shirt (or red shirt), and apply sunscreen at home.  We will also enjoy a concert in the afternoon given by the 3rd graders.

v Thursday, May 24:   We will have our Author’s Day. We have written many stories this year. We will go through our writing portfolios and share our favorite writings with our friends.  Your child’s portfolio and rough draft writing folder will come home later in the week. Take some time to go through it and let your child share his/her writing. They have come a long way this year!   Ms. Michelle from the Harrison Public Library will come to visit us, share stories, and explain the Summer Reading Program. Please plan to sign up for this program!

v Friday, May 25:  We have our field trip to the Cincinnati Zoo. Wear play clothes (dress for the weather) and your first grade balloon t-shirt.  Pack a lunch and drink in a throw-away bag.  Please put it in a plastic “Kroger type” bag as we will be walking around with our lunches and paper bags tend to rip. Thanks.  Parent helpers, meet at our classroom no later than 9:00 am. There should be room for all parents to ride the bus and this seems to work well. If you do decide to drive, you will have to pay $8.00 for parking upon arrival. Still meet at the classroom first. Thanks.  We will enjoy ice cream from the PTC when we get back to school. Thanks PTC!

v Sunday, May 27:  Pentecost Sunday!  Happy Birthday to our Church!  Try to go to Mass as we have been learning much about the Holy Spirit and Pentecost.

v Monday, May 28:  No School   Memorial Day

v Tuesday, May 29:   “Sock it to Cancer”  Wear crazy socks to school today.   We will have our “Class Store” and spend all our play money that we have been earning all year long.  We will practice counting, adding and subtracting money as well as getting some “good deals”!  We will also raffle off our classbooks that we have written this year. We wrote more than 50 books!!!   In the afternoon, we will meet with our 7th grade Big Brothers/Sisters for one, last time.  We will enjoy the afternoon together and do a bubble~ science activity as well as have a pizza snack.  It should be fun!

v Wednesday, May 30:  Relay for Life Day! We will do activities throughout the day as a school. We will walk the playground track throughout the day. All are welcome to join us. We will line the track with our quarters, raffle off the basket prizes, learn about cancer prevention and celebrate with survivors.  Wear your first grade balloon shirt and bring a water bottle. Thanks for all your support for this cause.

v Thursday, May 31:  Clean Up Day!  Today will be our classroom clean-up day.  Please bring in an old rag to use for cleaning.  Please help your child empty out his/her school bag this evening.  Early Dismissal at 2:30.

v Friday, June 1:  Today is our last day of first grade.  That is hard to believe!  We will have an all school Mass.    Please wear your uniform to school!  Bring play clothes to change into after Mass.  We will walk to Harrison Community Center.  Pack a lunch and drink in a throwaway bag.  We will eat lunch and enjoy the day together.  We will celebrate our end of the year/summer birthdays with some treats.  We will head back to school around 1:45.  Remember, we dismiss at 2:30 on this last day.  Any parent that wishes to join us on Friday at the Community Center, just meet us over there any time after about 11:30 or so.  No other helper note will be sent home.  Children may bring toys, nerf balls, etc.  Not hard balls or bats.  If it rains hard (which we pray it will not), then we will stay at school and will not need parent helpers. (Birthday children should still send in the treats as planned.)

Have a safe, healthy, wonderful summer!  The children will bring home their report cards and a summer packet on the last day of school. (Please, still bring your backpacks.)  The summer packet may be used as you like to help keep up on the skills learned in first grade.  Keep reading and writing!  Have fun and enjoy your families over the summer.  It’s been a great year thanks to all of you!  I will miss you all!

                                                        Peace,

                                                        Mrs. Post
