Reading:

Quarter 3: The focus on this quarter is on Non fiction, specifically Functional Format (Recipe, How to, Flier, Advertisement, Menu), Non fiction text features (glossary, table of contents, Index, headings, graphics, captions etc), and  reference materials (dictionary, thesaurus, atlas, internet for research). We have been working on 4 point summaries with fiction and non-fiction.   Our reading goal for the month of February is 2 historical fiction books related to the Civil War.  

Second quarter - we have continued using the Jr Great books and the Mondo curriculum.  Our focus has been on integrating reading, writing and social studies by reading the historical fiction novel, Blood on the River.  The students are learning just what it was like to be a Jamestown settler.  They are doing comprehension/discussion questions and reading response journal entries for each chapter, as well as reading strategy whole class, group and independent activities.  This strategies line up with the NNPS reading curriculum. 

The November reading goal is due 11/30 by 3 pm.  The students are to read one fourth grade or above fiction book and do the AR test or complete the comprehension sheet with an 80% or above.  They are also to read the Jr Great story Fresh and complete the activity we have provided them with an 80% or above.  

First quarter - we have been reading short stories from the TAG curriculum (the Junior Great books) and also using the new Mondo curriculum to practice reading skills and strategies (changes in setting, character traits and feelings, narrative elements, genre, theme etc). 

The first reading goal is due on the last day of the month by 3 pm.  The students need to read books that are fourth grade level or higher to meet the goal.  They need to earn an 80% or above on the AR test or the course to comprehension activity to prove that they read and understood the book.

  • 1 Jr Great Story (no AR test - there is an activity) The Enchanted Sticks

Fourth quarter - we have started a new novel, My Daniel, that is part of the William and Mary TAG curriculum.  We will work on persuasive writing pieces in this same unit and focus on central theme: change.

The April Reading goal is 1 biography, 1 book about the Civil Rights movement and 1 book about weather.

Third quarter focus is on Fiction.  We are reading The Fighting Ground (a novel about the American Revolution) in class and the students will take the AR comprehension test following completion of the novel.

The February reading goal is due February 29th.  Students need to read two fourth grade level books, one fiction chapter book and one book about electricity.  They need to get an 80% or above on the AR test or the course to comprehension sheet to prove they read and comprehended the books. 

Students have been reading non-fiction in class, focusing on determining importance and non-fiction text features (photographs, captions, headings, labels, diagrams, charts) as well as the historical fiction book Blood on the River, which is about the Jamestown settlement experience.

Vocabulary :

The following website has interactive games that go with the vocabulary book.  The book is color orange and the version is 2011. The students can log in with their first.last names and the password mustangs

Writing:

We are working on creating an advertisement for clouds.  Writing is integrated with reading in that the students are learning how to write functional formats.

Students will review the 6 traits of writing.  They will work on processed and unprocessed writing pieces.  They will also learn grammar through instruction and Daily Oral Language exercises.
