WEEK OF MAY 21st: SPELLING--Lesson 34; exercises due on Thursday, test on Thursday; Lesson 35 for 8th grade. WRITING: The last writing assignment of this year is a narrative(story). All of it, except the initial teaching of narratives, will be done at home. I am listing all the directions and dates so that both students and parents will be fully aware of them. 1) A narrative story has a beginning, a middle, and an end. 2) It involves characters. If the narrator is a character in the story, the story is written in first person. If the narrator just tells the story, it is written in third person. 3) A narrative has plot (what's happening) and setting (where it's taking place). 4) The topic is one of your choice. 5) Write a short, creative title. 6) The rough draft should be a minimum of four sides of loose leaf, double-spaced. It is due to me for approval no later than Friday, May 18th. 7) The published (good) copy must be, at least, one side of a page typed, double-spaced, 12-14 font OR you may handwrite it. This would be a minimum of two sides of loose leaf in manuscript writing, single-spaced. The title must be centered on the top of the paper, no matter which of the two ways you choose to complete the paper. Name and grade goes at the bottom. The rough draft is to be stapled to the back of the good copy. 8) You will be graded on the creativity of your story, sentence structure, and your following of the elements of the story as in numbers 1 and 2 above. Directions for completion will also count. 9) The story is due NO LATER than Friday, May 25th. It can be handed in before then; after that date you will receive a reduced grade. After two dates late, your grade will be zero.
GRAMMAR--8th grade will begin the chapter on adjectives and adverbs (Chapter 9). Grades 6 and 7, chapter 9 test on Tuesday, May 22nd; 5th grade will continue Unit 3 on verbs. 8th GRADE INFORMATION: 1) Rocking Horse Ranch trip IS MONDAY, JUNE 4th. 2) 8th Grade exams are Tuesday, May 29th-Friday, June 1st. 3) A letter is being sent home today about specifics of graduation. 4) Field Day is this Friday, rain or shine, followed by a barbecue and 12:30 dismissal. HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND ! 5) The 8th grade exam schedule is as follows: LATIN AND SPANISH--Wed., May 23rd LANGUAGE ARTS AND MATH--Tues., May 29th SOCIAL STUDIES--Wed., May 30th SCIENCE AND RELIGION--Thurs., May 31st
