Mrs. Brown-Clair's Art Classes

Kindergarten

Kingergarten students will learn how to be an architect.  We will talk about Frank Lloyd Wright and create our own Geometric Houses.  We will also learn about Gustav Klimt as we create a drawing of spiral snails.

 First Grade

First graders will celebrate our diversity by creating self-portraits and learning about Leonarda Davinci and the Mona Lisa.  Our next project is always a big hit!  Students will learn about the artist John James Audubon and draw an owl.  We will use oil pastels to then color them.

 Second Grade

Second graders will learn about the artist George Rodrigue as we read the book Why is Blue Dog Blue?  We will then draw our own dogs and paint them the appropiate color.  According to help distinguish where our dog is we will paint a background to tell our story.  Monet will be our next artist.  We will study his waterlilly paintings and then create a similar painting with each student as a part of the painting!  Then finally we will learn about the history of the Statue of  Liberty as they create our Lovely Lady Liberty.  By studying the Elements of Design - shape and line each student will draw their own unique version of of this symbol of freedom.

 Third Grade

Third grade will learn about Georgia O'Keeffe and her beautiful flower paintings.  Students will create their own version of her artwork by creating a crayon resist watercolor flower!!!  Clay is our next medium.  We will learn about the history of an ancient Greek pottery vessel called the fish plate and create our own modern version which I call a Fishy Dishy!  With fall upon us we will also create a beautiful swirling leaves painting.

Fourth Grade

As we finish up our Falling for Foreshortening project students will learn about the artist Mondrian as they learn how to hookrug their own unique design!  In order to get ready for Christmas the 4th graders will create the long awaited snowglobes.  We will talk about sculpture and the artist George Segal to create these mini masterpieces!

Fifth Grade

Fifth graders will create a repousse by using glue and paint.  We are also learning about animation by creating an original flip book!  With Christmas fast approaching we will wrap up our other projects and then begin our Santa pillows!  Students will learn about pop art and talk about the artist Claes Oldenburg and his famous soft sculpture entitled "Giant Hamburger"!

Sixth Grade

Sixth graders will learn about Georgia O'Keeffe as we expand our review of perspective and learn about 2-point perspective.  We will create a beautiful cityscape scene.  I hope the students don't get too hungry as we talk about Wayne Thiebaud and of his delicious looking cake paintings!  We will create our own version of these delectible desserts as we learn how to draw a circle in perspective and practice  shading with oil pastels.

Seventh Grade

Seventh graders will learn about M.C. Escher and study his tesselations.  By following some simple rules they too will be able to create their own unique tesselation drawing!  Our next project is always a favorite of students.  We will learn about the art of marbeling paper.  We will incorporate our finished paper into a beautiful bouquet of flowers.  We may take a break from our current in progress projects for a change of pace and learn about Ellsworth Kelly and some abstract art.  We will discuss the use of a viewfinder and the hard edge painting movement.  This year we will change our project a little and use a flower as our focal point to create a unique painting.

Eighth Grade

Judy Chicago and "The Dinner Party" will be our inspiration as we create a "plate" that represents the true Christmas spirit!  Each student will create a miniature Nativity Scene using clay and their imagination.  As we finish this up we will talk about Walt Disney and the art of animation as we create our own cel painting.
