- CLASSROOM DISCUSSION ON SHOUT-OUTS/TALKING or SOCIALIZING - Earlier this month, students agreed on rules and consequences for an individual's poor choices and behaviors in class. However, in this classroom, after lunch, it appears as if there is an increase in group off task behaviors (talking/socializing and shout outs than before lunch). As well, there is also misbehavior occuring during PE and Music, a time when students have a different teacher. Sometimes it is caused by a couple of individuals seeking attention, but much of these times, it's the group being silly with each other, socializing and joking. It was explained to the students that this behavior slows down the entire class, it annoys students trying to focus, frustrates teachers, and causes more work at home for some individuals (homework), and as a result, there is less time to do fun activities in the school day. Students explained that this behavior is a carry over from their previous class, where it was more tolerated, but understood that to be successful in 5th Grade Challenge, it needs to be reduced.

There will be one evening for "group" student led conferences, Tuesday, Nov. 22, from 5-7p.m. During that time, any family that cannot make their individual conference time, can attend, but do note that other students may be there showing off their portfolios and leading their conferences for their family at the same time. Because we have a very full class of 27 students, this year, families will have 30 minute blocks of time for individual conferences. Also, the conference schedule is pretty tight as far as moving to other times available.

NOTE: MISSING ASSIGNMENTS are a problem for some students in this class. And, at this time of year, with half a year to go, it's not uncommon for students to begin to lag in getting their work done or in its quality.
To support students, they're given a lot of time in class to complete assignments and a lot of feedback. Those who are using it wisely are turning in their work in and upholding a high degree of quality. Great job! However, some students are not using their time wisely, and are quietly chatting, drawing, or reading instead,or appearing like they have all of their work finished.
I have noticed an increase in assignments being turned in late, without names, improperly labelled, sentences not proofread, or incomplete. To help students, they're told of their missing assignments daily, some are conferenced during planner time, and feedback is written on their corrected work. Check-off clipboards are available to view, and recesses are available for more work time. I encourage students who have late work to call home or make a note of it in their planner. Extra credit is always available and students can redo math assignments. You can help your child stay on track by asking them about the days assignments, checking their backpacks for incomplete work, or work without a stamp of "Assignment Recieved" on it, and asking them if they turned in their work. If you have any questions about your student, shoot me an email, and I'll let you know if its a concern. Take care!
