This week's story is:

Two Days in May (Realistic Fiction)
by: Leyla Torres
Sonia, her father, and a group of their neighbors, launch a peaceful protest to help five deer that have wandered into their city neighborhood in search of food.
(Houghton-Mifflin, p.69s)

Daily:   READ, READ, READ, READ, READ, READ, READ and record it on your reading log.  Students are required to read for at least 30 minutes a day.  Don't forget to record the minutes on the reading log!  Also, the vocabulary sheets that are sent home are counted as reading minutes.  Please sign  these sheets on a daily basis.  It is important for them to be able to read for a longer period of time to get ready for the EOG.

Math:

We have finished Topic 10. However, we will have a test on geometry vocabulary on Friday. The geometry vocabulary is located in the flashcards section.  There are 42 vocabulary words for this unit.  Many of the words are review (since kindergarten). Your child has a packet containing the words and their definitions.  Please have your child review these words every night. Reviewing these words can count as reading time in their reading logs.

We will simultaneously study Topic 7: Division Meanings, and Topic 9: Patterns and Relationships.

Please continue to quiz your child on their multiplication tables. Riding in the car is a great time to quiz your child.

Science:

We will work begin our unit on Sun, Moon, and Earth this week with a webquest. This will be a collaboration with Mrs. Kent, our tech facilitator.

Social Studies:

We continue with our unit on government, Unit 2:
Our Roles in Government

Health:

We continue to receive fresh fruits and vegetables on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

A website that I encourage your child to visit on a daily basis is:  www.ixl.com./signin/hurley.  This is a website that Mrs. Walton purchased for the school. It is math practice. I sent the new log in information home with your child. The info is on lime green paper that is staped to your child's agenda.

Another website purchased by Mrs. Walton is:

www.raz-kids.com.  This website has been updated for the 2011-2012.This is a reading website.  Your child should log in to the user name kimgall and their name will appear.

Who will be the daily winner in First in Math?  Every day, a student who solved the most problems in First in Math will wear the "Badge of Honor".  I have sent home information with your child's log in.  The website is:  www.firstinmath.com

There are also other free websites:

www.freerice.com (vocabulary, math)

 www.mathplayground.com (math)

www.starfall.com  (reading)

www.learningtoday.com (math & reading)

These are wonderful websites to help your child practice his/her skills.

If you have any questions, or if you need to reach me, please put a note in your child's agenda, e-mail me (best) or call the school. Please remember to send in any money in an envelope with your child's name and PIN number on it.

Thank you for your support and for allowing me to teach your child!
