Monday: No Enhancements Tuesday: Art Wednesday: Self Selected Reading Don't forget your library book! Thursday: Music Friday: PE Don't forget to wear tennis shoes! Homework Change: In language arts, the written homework will be as follows: Monday: Spelling Sentences using the rubric in the spiral notebook. Tuesday: Spelling Paper Wednesday: Spelling Paper Thursday: Study for spelling test and vocabulary test. Every night: Read / vocabulary / fluency for 30 minutes every night.
You can now access this week's spelling words on this site. Click on the Flashcard icon on the bottom of this page, and then click on that week's link. The spelling lists have changed. We will have 16 spelling words from each week's story, and then 9 extra words will be the High Frequency Words that the children need to know by the end of third grade. Therefore, each spelling test will now consist of 25 spelling words. Fluency passages are sent home every Monday. Please allow your child to read the passage every night, and then initial the back graph. They will read them on Monday and Friday. I will mark their progress on the graph that is on the back. Thank you for your cooperation! Language Arts: This week's story is: Two Days in May (Realistic Fiction) by: Leyla Torres Sonia, her father, and a group of their neighbors, launch a peaceful protest to help five deer that have wandered into their city neighborhood in search of food. (Houghton-Mifflin, p.69s) Daily: READ, READ, READ, READ, READ, READ, READ and record it on your reading log. Students are required to read for at least 30 minutes a day. Don't forget to record the minutes on the reading log! Also, the vocabulary sheets that are sent home are counted as reading minutes. Please sign these sheets on a daily basis. It is important for them to be able to read for a longer period of time to get ready for the EOG.
Math: We have finished Topic 10. However, we will have a test on geometry vocabulary on Friday. The geometry vocabulary is located in the flashcards section. There are 42 vocabulary words for this unit. Many of the words are review (since kindergarten). Your child has a packet containing the words and their definitions. Please have your child review these words every night. Reviewing these words can count as reading time in their reading logs. We will simultaneously study Topic 7: Division Meanings, and Topic 9: Patterns and Relationships. Please continue to quiz your child on their multiplication tables. Riding in the car is a great time to quiz your child. Science: We will work begin our unit on Sun, Moon, and Earth this week with a webquest. This will be a collaboration with Mrs. Kent, our tech facilitator. Social Studies: We continue with our unit on government, Unit 2: Health: We continue to receive fresh fruits and vegetables on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. A website that I encourage your child to visit on a daily basis is: www.ixl.com./signin/hurley. This is a website that Mrs. Walton purchased for the school. It is math practice. I sent the new log in information home with your child. The info is on lime green paper that is staped to your child's agenda. Another website purchased by Mrs. Walton is: www.raz-kids.com. This website has been updated for the 2011-2012.This is a reading website. Your child should log in to the user name kimgall and their name will appear. Who will be the daily winner in First in Math? Every day, a student who solved the most problems in First in Math will wear the "Badge of Honor". I have sent home information with your child's log in. The website is: www.firstinmath.com
