Please check on the Parent Portal for updates on assignments and test dates. Mr. Bibeau’s Chemistry Class Before getting into the details of this course, I want you to know that I teach Chemistry in order to make a positive impact on my students’ lives. If you are dealing with any difficult issue, whether it is related to my class or not, please let me know, and I’ll do everything I can to help. For many students, the content of chemistry is daunting, and I always seek to remove as much anxiety as I can from the classroom. Objectives of this course My primary objective in teaching this course is to help you to develop strong analytic thinking skills as you master the fundamental principles of chemistry. In so doing, you will all succeed at the highest level on the SOL Chemistry exam at the end of the year. To meet these goals, the course material of Chemistry will be challenging, but you will all become highly skilled with study and practice. The success of every individual student is critical to me. If you are struggling with some of the course material, I want to know so that I can help. I encourage you to ask questions during class time, both when I am explaining a concept to the whole class and when you are working individually in small groups. If you need extra help, please let me know immediately, and I will work with you during, before, and after school until you understand the material. Required materials for the course Please bring a pencil, paper, a three-ring binder and a scientific calculator to class every day. A scientific calculator is one that is capable of scientific notation. I recommend the TI-30X, available at Target, Walmart, or the University Bookstore for about $13. If you already have a more expensive graphing calculator, you may use it for this course; however, you do not need to purchase a graphing calculator. Please feel free to email me if you have questions about what type of calculator is acceptable for this course. Test preparation Preparing for a chemistry quiz or test involves not just study, but practice. You must begin this process several days before a test or quiz so that you can figure out what is difficult for you. When you do make a mistake, rejoice! (OK, maybe I’m getting a little carried away…) Making a mistake as you prepare for a test shows what you need to work on so that you won’t make that same error again on test day. Remember that mistakes are necessary for learning, and our goal is progress, not perfection. As I said before, if you are having trouble, let me know. A special word about respect… I will always treat you with respect, and I expect that you will treat your fellow classmates and me with respect in your words and actions. Please don’t treat anyone with disrespect, even if it’s only a joke between friends. I will not tolerate any bullying or unkind behavior toward any of my students. Please come talk to me if you know of any bullying or mistreatment. Grading Your course grade will be determined as an average of the total points accumulated in a six week period. The Radford City High School grading system is listed below:
In order to provide some additional motivation to succeed at the highest level on the End of Course SOL exam in Chemistry, I will offer a significant bonus to students who succeed on the SOL: any student who passes the SOL exam will have his or her overall grade increased as if an extra ‘A’ for an additional six weeks marking period had been averaged into the student’s overall grade. The effect of a 94 will be averaged in for any passing SOL score, a 97 for Pass Advanced scores and a 100 for perfect scores. Homework may not earn credit or may earn reduced credit if it is turned in late. Longer assignments, such as lab reports and problem sets may be penalized 10% per day late, but larger penalties typically apply after the assignment has been graded and passed back to the class. Attendance I will follow the school’s policy regarding attendance. Please let me know of any extenuating circumstances that apply to you, and I will do my best to accommodate you. If you miss a quiz or test in my class, but are present in the building at some other point during that day (for instance, if you check out early or come in late) you MUST see come see me before checking out or after checking in so that we can plan your makeup. Laboratory Safety Your safety in lab is my top priority. I require that a safety contract be signed by you and your parents before you may begin any laboratory experiments in chemistry. Horseplay in any form will always result in you being removed from the lab and receiving a grade of zero. Finally, I want you to know that it is a great pleasure and honor to be your Chemistry teacher at Radford High School. I feel confident that you will find this class to be challenging, rewarding, and fun, and I look forward to teaching you. Please feel free to contact me at the email address below if there is any way in which I can help. --Mr. Bibeau cbibeau@rcps.org | |||||
