LANGUAGE ARTS & AVID, NOVEMBER 16-25, 2009 

ALL GROUPS:

     Bah humbugs, book clubs and the birthing of bibliophiles -- such are the building blocks upon which second quarter will be based.  As one might gather, then, from the rather alliterative opening sentence, the next few months will be devoted to the development of not only cultivating a life-long appreciation of both classical (a.k.a., Dickens' A Christmas Carol) and modern texts (via novels shared in a collaborative peer environment), but also the fostering of critical literary assessments through a variety of reader response tools (esp. the dialectic log).  Thus, though the view outside our windows might prove bleak and barren in the coming winter months, the vista of our imaginations will be germinating with the sprouts of knowledge and self-created meaning and possibility only books can provide.

E-03:

  • Please be sure all work for second quarter has been submitted -- "To Serve Man" pkt., "Dracula" cloze activity, "Grapple with Apples," & "Goblin" activity.
  • Read designated novel sections and prepare "Punctuation Prompt" for Book Club session on Monday, Nov. 23rd.
  • Prepare dialectic log for "Stave One" & "Stave Two" of A Christmas Carol for review and discussion on December 2nd.

  • Prepare Chocolate paragraph {Topic Sentence + 6 Detail Sentences + Closing Sentence} for submission on Tuesday, Nov. 17th.
  • Respond to reading strategy questions for "Priscilla & the Wimps" for teacher review and assessment on Thursday, Nov. 19th.

AVID: 

  • Prepare final, typed copy of collaborative vocabulary project for sharing and teacher review on Tuesday, Nov. 17th.
  • Craft "Ideal Thanksgiving" piece for submission on Wednesday, Nov. 25th.
  • Ready two inquiry-based questions for tutorial on Thursday, Nov. 19th.
  • Submit learning log for Nov. 16-20 on Monday, Nov. 23rd.
