Just wanted to say thank you to everyone for the generous class gift! It has been such a pleasure teaching your kids this year.  They've learned so much, come so far and they are going to love second grade!  I hope everyone has a wonderful and relaxing summer! I'll certainly miss all of them!

5/29/18 - Tuesday

In writing we are going to work on the finishing touches of our realistic fiction series to turn in for Author's Day!

In reading we are back in fiction and will describe characters, setting and major events in a story using key details.

In science we will identify ways to inform people about protecting the environment.

In social studies we will compare alike goods that have different values and review the attributes of a farmer’s market.

Reminders:

  1. Author's Day is this Friday, June 1st.  K-2 will be from 2:35 - 3:05.

1st grade teachers will be out of the building for a training Thursday afternoon so please be sure to send in a paper note if your child is going home another way that day so the substitute is aware.

5/21/18 - Monday

In writing this week we are working on including chapters and teaching patterns to help writers elaborate for their story books.

In math we will explain that partitioning shapes into more shares creates smaller shares.

In reading we will discuss information provided by pictures and information provided by the words in a text.

In social studies we will identify markets in the local community and how they operate.

In science we will describe how well reduce, reuse and recycle is working in the school.

Reminders:

  • Spelling quiz will be on Thursday of this week due to Field Day Friday. This will be the last week for spelling and homework. Students are still encouraged to read their books each night!
  • Field Day:
    • First grades color for will be red.
    • Students may bring a water bottle with them but please be sure to write their name on it.
    • Please also have them put on sunscreen before they come into the building. If they want to reapply they can bring a bottle with them but cannot share with others.
  • They are also welcome to bring towels to sit on if they want a break or for watching tug-o-war
  • Author’s Day will be June 1st from 2:35 – 3:05. Children may be dismissed with their parents after.
  • The BHES Volunteer Luncheon will be on May 30th from 11:30 - 1:00 in the Media Center.  Please RSVP to Ms. Pike by Friday, May 25th if you plan on attending.

5/14/18 - Monday

In writing we are continuing to work on our realistic fiction stories. We'll be focusing on tiny realistic details.

In math we are starting a unit on partitioning. We'll be talking about halves, fourths and determining multiple ways to partition shapes into equal shares.

In reading we will identify the main topic and retell key details of a text.

In science we will identify and describe to meet basic needs and protect the environment.

In social studies we will identify how transportation links places by the movement of goods.

Reminders:

  1. Spelling words came home on Friday.  The quiz for this cycle will be next Thursday, May 24th because the 25th is Field Day.  This will be our last spelling cycle of the year!
  2. Mark your calendars!! Author's Day will be on June 1st.  Our grade level will be celebrating from 2:35 - 3:05!

5/7/18 - Monday

In writing we will continue to work on our realistic fictions books. We will focus on introducing characters in a series book.

In math we are continuing geometry and will practice composing 2D shapes to create a composite shape.

In reading we will practice using various text features to locate key facts or information in text.  We will also discuss reasons authors give to support points.

In science we will identify and describe what it means to conserve natural resources such as water, land and electricity.

In social studies describe how people earn money by working at a job.

Reminders:

  1. The spelling quiz for this cycle will be this Friday!
  2. Thank you to all who donated books to our classroom from the Scholastic Book Fair - we're having a good time reading them!
  3. We are kicking off our summer reading challenge today (similar to last years).  In your child's whale folder you will find their login information.  Happy reading!

5/1/18 - Tuesday

In writing we are continuing our realistic fiction stories.  Students are working on adding 'sparkle' words to enhance their vocabulary.

In math we are starting geometry.  We will be using geoboards to make shapes and define attributes of 3D shapes.

In reading we are returning to informational texts.  We are going to use text features to help us find information.

In science we will describe what happens to trash when it is thrown away and how this limits natural resources.

In social studies we will identify how technology affects the way people work.

Reminders:

  1. The spelling quiz will be next Friday, May 11th.
  2. The Scholastic Book Fair is this week - please be sure to stop by!
  3. I will be out of the building this Friday so please be sure to send in papers notes to give to the sub if there are any changes in how your child goes home.
  4. If you're at the Azalea Feast this weekend please be sure to stop by the Bear Bakery as I will be working all day!

4/23/17 - Monday

In writing we are starting a new unit on realistic fiction. Students will begin to create their own chapter books.

In math we are continuing to work on adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers.

In reading we are using the 5 W's questions (who, what, where, when, why) to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

In social studies we are discussing skills that students need to complete jobs at home and school along with skills people need for their work in the community.

In science we are identifying and describing different sources of electricity.

Reminders:

  1. The spelling quiz is on Friday.
  2. The Book Fair is returning to Bradley Hills next week. A preview booklet will be sent home this afternoon.
  3. Thursday is Take Your Child to Work Day - if you plan on participating, I hope you enjoy this special day with your child!

4/16/17 - Tuesday

In writing this week we are continuing to work on our informational teaching books.  We will focus on writing good leads and introductions and conclusions.

In math we will continue to add and subtract 2 digit numbers and showing strategies used to solve the problem.

In reading we will identify words and phrases that suggest feelings and appeal to the senses.

In science we will identify ways in which humans rely on water, land and energy.

In social studies we will focus on natural and human resources used in the production of a good.

4/9/18 - Monday

In writing this week we will continue to focus on informational writing (something we know a lot about that we can teach someone else).

In math we will continue to add and subtract 2-digit numbers using different strategies to solve these equations.

In reading we will identify words and phrases in poems that appeal to the senses.

In science we will be talking about germs and identify ways to prevent the spread of germs.

In social studies we will give examples of human and natural resources used in the production of a good (natural, capital and human resources).

Reminders:

  1. The spelling quiz for this spelling cycle will be this Friday.
  2. FLEX after school activities start tomorrow.  Please be sure to send a note in with your child on the first day of their activity.  We will hold onto these notes for the remainder of the session.  You will only need to send in another note if the child is NOT attending the activity that day.

4/3/18 - Tuesday

Welcome back & I hope each of you had a wonderful and relaxing break!

In math this week we will continue adding a 1 digit number and a 2 digit number using models or drawings to describe the strategy used.

In reading we will identify who is telling the story at various points in the book and identify words and phrases that suggest feelings.

In social studies we will explain how people adapt to changing weather conditions.

In science we will recognize differences in family structure and customs.

In writing we will work on finishing up our informational brochures on Florida.

Reminders:

  1. Spelling words were sent home back in March and the spelling quiz will be on April 13th.  If you have misplaced words, tell the kids to let me know. Thank you!

 

3/19/18 - Monday

In writing we will continue to work on our state research brochures.  We will work on taking the information and putting into our own words making complete sentences.

In math we are returning to place value.  We will practice on adding a 2 digit number and a 2 digit number ending in 0.

In reading we are working on a new strategy that we refer to as ACE (A: Answer the question, C: Cite evidence, E: Explain) to help students with their written responses.  All the steps that we look for when grading a detailed reading response are in this strategy.

In social studies we will continue to talk about how people protect the environment.

In science we will describe a variety of natural and human made objects found in familiar environments.
