Handed out instructions for a "Coat of Arms" project that is due this Friday.



Aug. 26



Started a "study guide" map for next weeks quiz. The quiz will be a map quiz on North Carolina's Top Ten Cities.



Aug. 27



Today we reviewed Chp. 1 "Regions" notes. We also began a Chp. 1 map that will include all the questions for Chp. 1 map test next week.

Students presented thier "Coat of Arms" projects today.



Our first quiz of the Qt. is next Wed. on North Carolina's top ten cites.

Reviewed for the City map quiz. Homework for tonight is to study for that quiz.



Sept. 3



Took the "Top Ten NC Cities " map quiz today. Students in Ms. Tatters 4th period math class were in my room today for CSI. Their CSI map is due on Sept 4.



All classes take the Chp. 1 Map Test on Friday.





Sept. 11

Viewed video today on the Fall of the Aztec and Inca empires. No homework tonight.

Sept. 12

Compared the Fall of the Aztec and Inca empires today. Students learned today that they will recite the Preamble to the Constitution next Wed. Sept. 17 as part of Constitution Day.

Sept. 15

Today we learned about different exporers that came to America. We filled out an Exporers Chart that included the Name of the explorer, Year and Country  they sailed in and for, and What they were trying to do or What they did. We also colored and labaled a World map and map of the Americas that showed what each explorer did.

Sept. 16

Took our first Today In History pop quiz of the year. We then began a filf that told the story of the Lost Colony of Roanoke.

Tonights homework is to study the Preamble to the Constitution and recite it to the class for a homework grade on Wed.

Sept. 17

Classes finished watching the Lost Colony video from Tuesday. We will review Chp 2 Section 4 on Thursday. Students are expected to explain the story of the Lost Colony of Roanoke.

A number of students recited the Preamble today. We will finish that activity up on Thursday.

A number of students were unable to say the Preamble today. Some didn't even make an attempt to say it. Students will be asked to say it again on Thursday for a lower grade.

We will be taking our Chp. 2 test next Tuesday. We will go over the study guide on Friday.

Sept. 18

Reviewed notes on the "Lost Colony of Roanoke". See if your student can tell you the story.

Anyone re-taking a Chp 1 test or City map quiz, have homework tonight. They will be coming to my room during CSI for the re-take. Their grade will be the average between the two tests.

Chp 2 test will take place next Wed. Sept. 24. We will be going over the test study guide on Friday. the study guides can be turned in for extra credit on Monday. The extra points will count toward the Chp 2 test.

Sept. 19

Today we filled in a "Flow Chart" of the events for the Lost Colony. This chart will be on Chp. 2's test.

A study giude for Chp. 2's test is due on Monday. The study guide will add 5 points on to both parts of the test. Each part will count as its own grade. Several people finished the study guide in class and have turned it in. Anyone else that would like extra credit, has to finish  the study guide as homework this weekend. Not turning in a study guide will not hurt their grade. We will be reviewing the study guide next Tuesday in class.

Sept. 22

Took up Chp. 2 Test Study Guides today. We will review for Chp. 2 test on Tuesday.

Tonights homework is Chp 2 Lost Colony Fill In Worksheet and Chp. Worksheet.

To help things along........there were about 20 families that were part of the White Colony, 117 total. Wingina was the native killed by the soldiers in the Lane Colony. Remember, Amadas and Barlowe came to America first, then the Lane Colony and later the White Colony.

If you are a Dire Wolf, you are welcome. If you are a parent, please pass along this information. It will help on tonights homework.

Sept. 23

Today we reviewed/graded last nights homework. The homework was designed to prepare for the Chp. 2 test.

Tonights homework is to study for the Chp. 2 Test on Wed. There are two parts to the test. Part 1 will consist of 30 questions on the Lost Colony. Students should study their Lost Colony "flow chart" as well as the ID's. Part 2 of the test covers European Exploation. Students should study:

"Rise and Fall of the Aztec and Inca Empire" note.

Explorers Maps- World and Americas- Everone will need to bring their own colored pencils.

Sept. 24

Tested today on Chp. 2. Topics were the Lost Colony of Roanoke and European Exploration. The Lost Colony scores will appear on Fridays Mid-term grade reports.

No homework tonight.

Sept. 25

Today classes were cut short, so students were able to work on Explorers worksheets. They are due on Friday. Some students have to finish the worksheet tonight as homework. Some students were able to finish today in class.

Mid-term grade reports come home on Friday. Please sign them and have them returned Monday.

Sept. 26

Talked a little today about the Nixon-Kennedy TV debate from 1960. This was today's "Date In History.

Began setting up the 13 colonies by IDing key terms and people from Chp 3 of our North Carolina history book. Also began to ID key tems from Chp. 3 of our "in class" American history book.

No homework for the weekend!!

Please sign mid-term grade reports and return them on Monday.

Sept. 29

We worked on finishing all terms and ID's from Chp. 3 (American History). We still have 3-6 to finish on Tuesday.

Sept. 30

Began outline work on the Jamestown colony.

No homework tonight.

Oct. 1

Saw a short clip on the Nixon-Kennedy TV debate from 1960.

Finished outlining Section 1 of Chp. 3-Jametown and the Pilgrims.

On Thursday, classes will work in groups to set up the New England-Middle and Southern Colonies, including North Carolina.

Oct. 2

Worked in groups today to outline the rest of Chp. 3. We will review Section 2, the New England colonies, Friday.

No homework tonight.

Oct. 3

Students were given a score sheet for the last two Presidential debates. The sheets are due the day after the debate. They will be worth 20 points extra credit toward their test average.

We reviewed the formation of the New England colonies today and began work on the Middle colonies.

Some students from 1st period will be doing test corrections for Chp. 2's test as homework this weekend. They are due on Monday. 

Oct. 6

Reviewed the settlement of the Middle colonies today. We'll set up the Southern colonies including "the Carolinas" on Tuesday.

The only homework tonight goes to Third Period. A numbers of students in this class will be doing "test corrections" tonight. They have to correct all mistakes from the Chp 2 Explorers test and have their parents sign the test. They have to turn it in at the start of class on Tuesday in order to get points added to their test score.    

Oct. 8

Worked on our first "group class project" today. Some students will be looking up answers for their group tonight as homework. classes will have Thursday to work on the projects and then divide up the questions that are left, and finish them as homework over the long weekend.

FYI- Eli Whitney invented (with some help) the Cotton Gin. Maryland, My Maryland is a favorite song in....Maryland. Hurricanes 2- New Jersey Devils 1.

Oct. 9

Last class day to work on group project. Any questions not answered by the group have to be answered this weekend. Final draft papers are due Tuesday, Oct. 14.

Chp 3 test study guide is due this Monday as extra credit. Chp 3 test is Oct. 15.

Oct. 13

Reviewed for 13 Colonies test. Began Chp. 3 notebook quiz. The quiz will be finished Tuesday in class.

Tonights homework is Chp. 3 re-teaching worksheet.

For anyone who needs a helping hand on the worksheet.........................Three lower colonies belong to Pennsylvania. they became Delaware. The Hudson River Valley belongs to New York. New Jersey became a Royal colony in 1702. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is known as the "City of Brotherly Love". 

Oct. 14

Finished the review for 13 Colonies test.

Homework tonight is to study for the test. The test will have 50 questions, and all questions are short answer. 

Oct. 15

Today we took the 13 Colonies test. Results should be coming by next Monday

Tonight is the last chance to earn test extra credit by scoring the Presidential debate. Score sheets must be in by this Friday.

On Thursday we'll step back from US and NC  History, and learn how the President of the United States is elected. Students will be starting an Electoral Map from the Election of 2000.  

Oct. 20

We will be spending the next few days in Chp 4 of the North Carolina history book. Our topic will be problems in North Carolina leading up to the Revolutionary War.

Homework tonight are three questions from Page 126. Election of 2000 maps are due Tuesday as is the 13 colonies Fill In worksheet.

Oct. 22

Did notebook chart on North Carolina Immigration in the late 1660'- 1700"s.

Thursday we will cover the "regulator" period of NC history.

Homework tonight is to finish today's chart.  

Oct. 23

Reviewed the settlement chart from Chp. 4-Section 2 today. Began to work on William Tryon and the Regulators. We will finish Chp. 4 up on Friday and students will team up for a Chp. 4 review the second half of class.

Oct. 24

Finished Chp. 4 Section 4-Regulators in North Carolina. Students started a Chp. review paper that will be due next Tuesday. The paper will count as a Social Studies grade and a language arts paper. The paper will be part of the 8th grade "writing " folder.

Monday we begin The Road to the American Revolution

Oct. 27

Tonights homework: Finish Chp. 4 "Understanding the Facts". This paper is due Tuesday.

Today we began Chp.5  Road to the Revolution. We defined 7-8 key terms to start our new notebook.

Oct. 28

Finished up key vocabulary for Chp. 5. Wed. we begin our notebook outline for "Chp 5.

During homeroom on Wed. students will vote in our school wide Presidential election. Each homeroom will represent a state in the United States.

We will also take our first assessment of the year. The topic will be the Regulators of Colonial North Carolina.

Oct. 31

Reviewed Chp. 4 Section 2 notes today.

Began the film, "Founding Fathers". Learned about Samual Adams and John Hancock.

No homework over the break.

Nov. 5

Grade sheets for Social Studies were given to every student today. In class we finished watching the last section of Part 1 of the Founding Fathers video.

Tonights homework is to write two paragraghs about the Boston Massacre. Paragragh #1 will present the American point of view, while papagragh #2 will be written from the British point of view. This grade is the first garde for the 2nd Qt.

Nov. 6

Students read their Boston Massacre papers in class. We began to outline sections 3 and 4 from Chp. 5. Tonight's homework is to finish the outline.

Reviewed Chp 5 Section 4 outline. Finished Part 2 of the Founding Fathers video. George Wahington and Thomas Paine were the subjects.

Nov.12

Began re-writing the Declaration of Independence today. The classes did a very good job with this task. We will finish up on Thursday and begin Part 3 of the Founding Fathers video.

Nov. 14

Finished viewing the "Founding Fathers" video. Gave out the study guide for the first test of the new Qt. The Road to the Revolution test is scheduled for Friday Nov. 21. Extra Credit study guides are due no later than Wed. Nov. 19. Test review will take place on Nov. 19. Next week, Dire Wolves can come into class during CSI time to work on the study guide.

Nov. 17

Took a Chp 5 Notebook quiz today in class. After finishing the quiz, we copied a Fill In Worksheet from Chp 5. The worksheet is due Wed.

Road to the Revolution test is this Friday. We start a group prject on the Revolutionary War, Tuesday.

Nov. 18

Worked in groups today on the Revolutionary War Fact Sheet.

Homework tonight will be to finish any Fill In Worksheets from Monday and/or finish extra credit study guide for Fridays test.

Any Dire Wolf who has not finished the Chp. 5 notebook quiz has one more chance to finish the quiz during CSI time on Wed. The quiz will be reviewed and graded on Thursday.

Nov. 19

Nov. 20

Tonights homework is to study for the Road to Revolution test on Friday. The test will have 35 questions.

Nov. 21

Took the "Road to Revolution " test today. A number of Dire Wolves were out of class today. Those students are expected to take the test on Monday.

The only homework that some students have this weekend is to look up Fact Sheet questions for their group from last Thursday.

Nov. 24

Last Thursday, Dire Wolves were given a handout explaining our next project for the 2nd Qt. The " I Am" poems and "Tombstone" projects are due Dec. 3. They will be presented during class.  Tonights homework is to work on the project. They should be far enough along that they will not have to work on the project over Thanksgiving.

Today we

started our vocabulery for Chp. 7 ( US and NC constitutions). Tuesday we will see part 4 of the "Founding Fathers" video. There will be a new Founding Father introduced Tuesday as will as new information on the other Founding Fathers that can be used for the project.

FYI- SPAN grades are now up for the second Qt.

Dec. 2

Today we reviewed the three groups of people that had to "compromise" in order for the US Constitution to be written. We then divided into pairs and began our fact finding notes on the Constitution. We will focus on Articles 1,2, and 3.

" I Am" poems on the Founding Fathers will be presented on Wed. as will as "Epitaphs. A grade rubric was presented today in class.

Dec. 3

Heard "Poems and "Epitaphs" today on the Founding Fathers. We have very talented Dire Wolves this year. No homework tonight. It's back to the Constitution on Thursday!

Dec. 4

Group work today trying to figure out how the Constitution works. There is homework tonight. Groups were to finish everything in their notebook and have it ready to go on Friday. Groups can finish the rest of the outline (not in the notebook)  on Friday.

Dec. 8

Took a homework quiz for work on the Constitution. After the quiz we began to review Articles 1-3. Many students DO NOT  have this work finishedeven though they had last Thursday and Friday as well as the weekend to work on it. Check your student to see if their outline is finished. Students are being graded on the ansers they provide during the review.

Dec. 9

Round 1 of the Geography Bee took up the first half of class. Students will receive extra credit points for every correct answer.

We continued to review the first three Articles to the US Constitution. We should finish up on Wed.

Dec. 11

Began working on the Bill of Rights today. We will finish up on Friday and students will work on amendments 11-27 on their own.

Mid-term grade reports come out Friday. Constitutional Fact Sheets are due on Friday for all classes.

Dec. 15

Finished up Amendments 11-27 (except 1st and 2ed periods).

3rd, 4th, 5th period homework- Bill of Rights case book.  A -Explain the # of the amendment involved, B violation or no violation, C- explain your ruling.

Tuesday we will cover " how a bill becomes a law".

Dec. 16

Covered " How a Bill Becomes A Law" today in the form of a flow chart. We will review the chart on Wed. and have a quiz on Thursday.

First and second periods have a Bill of Rights homework sheet tonight. It is due on Wed.

Wed. we will have a notebook quiz on the Constitution as well as a homework worksheet on the Amendments to the Constitution.

Dec. 17

Reviewed "How a Bill Becomes a Law" today. Notebook quiz Thursday.

Jan. 5

Today classes worked on a Chp. 7 review worksheet. It is due on Tuesday. Very few students are finished with the wroksheet so it will be homework tonight.

Chp. 7 study guides were given out today. Study guides can be turned in by Wed. for extra credit toward Thursday and Fridays Constitution tests.

Jan. 6

Talked about George Washington and John Adams and what they had to deal with as Presidents.
