Ms. Schaeffer's 8th Grade Science Class
(Updated Jan. 19th, 2012)

Dear Parents and Students,

It matters that you know about matter! Now that we have the basics of chemistry down, we've begun exploring about physical and chemical properties and physical and chemical changes. Students should have a deeper understanding about acidity, flammability, solubility and phase changes by the end of this unit!

Parents, as the year continues, please know that I am always willing to discuss grades, behavior, and any other general concerns you may have. I know that 8th graders are becoming more and more independent by the day, but I don't want you to feel as though you are shut out of their experience at Erwin. I can easily be reached by e-mail (schaefferjl@rss.k12.nc.us), the school phone (please leave a voicemail if I can't pick up!), or by written notes. The more that we are all in communication, the better this year will be for your student!

                                                                                                                      Sincerely,
                                                                                                                        Ms. Schaeffer

Important Announcements

Parents, please know that once I grade an assignment, I return it back to the students for them to keep in their binders until the end of the quarter. I will NEVER take points off of an assignment without indicating a reason on the assignment itself and students are always welcome to ask me if my assessment of their work is confusing.

Grade Reports are sent home every week on Thursdays. These reports will include a break-down of all of the assignments for the quarter so far, any missing work, and a current class average. My goal is for students to use these to monitor their progress in my class on their own, and because of that, I do not require that they be signed unless a student is making below 70%. However, I find it is often helpful for parents to know they are being sent, in case the need for monitoring them arises. :)

* The first grade report for 1st quarter was sent home on Thursday 9/15.
* A grade report was sent home on Thursday 9/22

Vocabulary quizzes will be given on most Fridays. Vocabutoons will need to be completed for each of the words and are generally assigned on Fridays and due on the following Wednesday. I've included flashcards at the bottom of this page to help students to study the definitions. A few words from "old" quizzes will continue to appear on the new quizzes each week, so don't just memorize them for the quiz and then forget them! You'll need them throughout the year!

Virtual Classroom Tour

Welcome to Ms. Schaeffer's 8th grade science class!

The turn in bins are where all completed assignments are turned in. You will be reminded in class what is due that day and it is also written on the board. It is YOUR responsibility to make sure that your paper makes its way into the turn-in bin before you leave, however!

Each day, an agenda will be posted on the board to let you know what we will be doing in class. You'll also notice that an essential question (the "big picture" question) and objective questions (the "puzzle piece" questions) will be posted. These questions are there to help you "check in" with yourself to make sure you are understanding the material.

This year, ALL classes will focus on literacy. Let's face it, the more difficulty you have in reading, the more difficulty you have in your other subjects as well. To help our Pirates become stronger readers, we'll be using team time (a block of time outside of the core subjects at the end of the day) to work on reading in three ways: practice (silent, independent reading), reading instruction (group reading with your team time leader), and vocabulary instruction (based on all of the content areas).

This is the go-to place for students who are absent. Each day, any assignments that were due will be written on the calendar and any homework assignments will be written in the agenda. Students should check this area FIRST when they come back to school after an absence.

Speaking of assignments, this is the board students should look at to see what the homework assignment for the night is and what needs to be turned in by the end of the period.

The materials sign is located on the door and will tell you everything you need to bring to class that day. Make sure you check it out before you go to your locker so that you are never unprepared!

All of the teams at Erwin now represent different colleges throughout North Carolina. Our (awesome) team is the East Carolina University Pirate team. Go Pirates!
