WELCOME

To The Seagulls' 6th Grade Language Arts & Social Studies Page

  • 2009-2010

This page was created to inform both students and parents of material being covered and students' daily assignments for sixth grade (Seagulls). This year in Language Arts we will be learning how to be effective communicators. We will focus on writing, grammar, mechanics, spelling, and types of sentences.  Students will study and compose various types of writing, such as:  stories, poems, persuasive essays, expository essays, reports, and speeches.  Students will read a wide range of literature from many periods and from different genres to build an understanding of the many dimentions of literature and then apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate texts. Through their reading, students will develop an understanding of and respect for diversity.
LITERATURE offers students a chance to see the world and live other lives vicariously. Literary terms, figurative language, literal language, and outside reading for pleasure all give your child an insight into life and the world around him/her. Each genre brings something new and different to his/her experiences and makes the classroom more interesting. The reading series this year will be challenging, but it is based on state standards and  all students will be actively involved in reading strategies that will improve comprehension as well as help students to relate and connect to the stories. Development of writing, grammar, vocabulary, and spelling skills are incorporated throughout the selections, giving students solid preparation for North Carolina standards-based assessment. During this quarter we will be reading a variety of stories as well as starting a novel.
  •
  • Sixth grade Seagulls during the months of February and March will be reading from unit 5 and unit 6.  Students will travel to worlds within and worlds without and learn about both kinds.  Part 1 , "Animal Wonders" introduces some animals both exotic and ordinary, who open people's eyes to the wonders of nature.  Part 2' Imaginary Worlds," takes readers on a journey to the most exciting place of all---their own imagination.  Anyone who has ever loved an animal will be enchanted by the selections in this unit.  The worlds that we create inside our heads may be the best of all, because in the imagination, anything is possible!
  • The students in the AIG classes will also be working from the William and Mary program.  Students will be reading the novel My Daniel  and completing projects, working on journal entries, and completing writing assignments.  Students will explore imaginative worlds and characaters by working in smal groups to produce and perform original skits for their peers.
  • Selections from a wide range of genres and perspecatives ensure that all students will find something to intrigue and engage them!

Students on the Seagull team can expect some homework nightly. Two tools to ensure that your student is doing his/her work are: THE HOMEWORK HOTLINE 704-633-9561 EXT. 6400 for 6th grade Seagulls, and homework planners that are given to each student at the beginning of the school year. Teachers post class assignments as well as homework assignments on the board each day. Students need to record these assignments and any other important information in their planners as a reminder of the day's events. Parents need to check homework pads nightly in order to assure that your child is completing assignments and also for notes that may be added concerning your child's work or progress. Any notes sent home in the planner needs to be signed
HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD STUDY

    1. Call the homework hotline if you have any questions concerning an assignment. (704-633-9561) EXT. 6400 for the Seagull team. Make sure that your child is writing down assignments on a daily basis by checking his/her planner each night. At home try to provide your child with a quiet place to study, and set a certain time that your child is required to study, read. or complete assignments each night. It is important that students have materials organized and ready for school the next day before going to bed.  You can help your child by checking to make certain that bookbags are organized.  It is frustrating for a student to get to school and realize that books and/or work is at home. We will be rewarding positive behavior and hope that all of our students can earn this award.
    .

Please take any opportunity that you have to look over your child's work aapd
be actively involved in your child's education by checking over your child's homework, planner, and calling the homework hotline.
