Welcome Back!! Second quarter will be over in three short weeks. Now is the time for all students to reevaluate their performance thus far in the school year. I only require parents to check their student's binder twice a quarter, however, if you feel the need to inspect your child's binder more frequently please do so:) If your child knows that you will be inspecting their performance more often, that may motivate them to complete and turn in their work on a more consistent basis.

Grading Policy
65% = Class work, projects, and quizzes
25% = Tests
10% = Homework
Many students have the idea that due to its small percentage, homework does not affect their grade. It can mean the difference between an A and B. Your child will usually have only one homework assignment per week. Keeping Skills Sharp is now completed on line, but is due Friday at the end of the school day. Class work is a very large percentage of your child’s grade. ADD 6 will be a weekly class work / homework assignment, however not the only one. I prefer to assign more class work than homework so I can assess how students are grasping the specific goal they are learning at the time. Tests and quizzes are very important as well. The tests given in my class will be in an “EOG” format. This means that I will use EOG type questions on the test, so students become comfortable with assessments that are similar to the EOG. All tests and quizzes are to be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to school. I prefer to have tests signed and returned, so I can keep a file for each student. If a conference is necessary during the year I have a record of each student's progress.
Math Binder & Composition Book
Organization is a very crucial skill for students to learn in middle school. Not only is it beneficial in middle school, but prepares them for the rigorous academics of high school. All of your child’s work will be kept in their math binder. Several times during each quarter the binder will come home for you to review their work. A signature sheet will be added to the binder for any questions or comments you may have.
Each day your child will be adding to their math notebook that will help ensure their success in my class. A composition book is a necessity for this task. Students need to learn how to correctly take notes. It is imperative that all students take notes and copy examples during class. Your child’s composition book is a perfect study tool for tests and quizzes.
Discipline
This year I am using "Give Me 5" in lieu of classroom expectations or rules. Give Me 5 is a classroom management tool that requires students to be mindful of their behaviors and actions during instruction time:
1. Eyes Watching
2. Ears Listening
3. Voices Quiet
4. Hands Still
5. Brains Thinking
Students in all classes will have a variety of ways to earn privileges if they chose to adhere to the Give Me 5 tool:
1. Each class has the opportunity to earn an M&M scoop in their jar each day. Students must work together using Give Me 5. If students have cooperated and made wise choices, their class will receive a scoop. Classes are never penalized for negative choices with the loss of a scoop. Instead it will take the class a longer period of time to fill their jar and earn a privilege.
2. Students in a gender specific class will have other options in addition to the M&M Manners program. Students in the all male class will be competing as teams to "score points." Students will receive a "playbook" that outlines behaviors that can score a touchdown, field goal, etc. and behaviors that can result in a loss of yardage.
Assessments
ClassScape assessments will be given approximately 4 times during the year, usually at the end of a grading period. The purpose of the assessment is to determine if a student has mastered the goals and objectives taught during a specific quarter. It is also a good way to determine their potential score on the Math EOG. If a student has not mastered an objective or goal, re teaching will be offered to ensure their mastery.
