Moved from finding % of a number to using the terms of "wholesale", "retail" and "mark-up". In context with the percent equation. Took notes on these terms and did some example problems from pages 359-360...assigned 3-24 on these pages.

Because yesterday we covered the last section in chapter 6, we began today with a breif reveiw of all the sections of chapter 6. In the end we focused on the last two sections 6.7 and 6.8. This included probability, odds and "the counting principle". After reviewing these concepts and going over several examples....assigned Practice 6.7/6.8 (worksheet) with selected problems. Also, because this was the end of the chapter, we will be reviewing and taking a test over chapter 6 early next week.

Continued working on problems revolving around the use of percents. Reviewed the percent equation and the relationship between fractions, percents and decimals. After which we took a short quiz over these concepts. No score was put in the gradebook, the there were a large number of 100%! Today we worked with % of change. This means increasing and decreasing number by a percent ( ie, What is the answer when 78 is increased by 20%?). You are still able to use the percent equation when soving these problems. After notes and examples, assigned page 354; 3-12, 14-21, 24, 25.

Monday, 1/30
Since this was the first day of the new semester, we spent some time reviewing classroom expectations and making sure they are understood. A big part of classroom expectations is coming each day ready to learn. This means coming to math class with your book and paper and pencil to work with. Any students who were not prepared today were set up with materials so they will be ready for the foreseeable future. If a students comes to class tomorrow unprepared it will be an infraction.
Period 3/4
Reviewed the concepts of ratios and proportions, including ways to write ratios, unit rate and using like ratios to solve proportions. Went over examples of these concepts together in class detailed why these concepts are important. Went over "Guided Practice" on page 277 of the book. Assigned pages 277-278; 9-24, 26, 28, 31, 34.

Reviewed concepts that were gone over last Thursday. This basically included knowing the difference between probability and odds. These terms should be in your notes. Today we also reviewed a concept called the "counting principle". This is a very elementary concept that involves using a "tree diagram" to find probability. Assigned pages 315-316; 3-16 (select 4 problems and create a complete tree diagram).

This was the last day of the semester. All late work and corrections were due today. In class today we participated in the Port Angeles Public School's Winter Benchmark Test. These tests are given to see how well a student is moving toward passing the MSP and high school graduation. They are not used by me as part of a students grade.

Period 3/4
Reviewed the process of adding integers with "like" signs and "unlike" signs. Corrected the Practice 6.2 from yesterday. Moved on to subtracting integers. The rule was simple! "Add the opposite". So...-6 - (-4) = becomes -6 + 4 = -2. Add and opposite of -4 is 4. Than just use the strategies from yesterday. Assigned Practice 6.3 (all).
Period 5/6
Went over the assignment from page 289 and did a quick quiz....everybody did very well (so they tell me.). Went over the use of scale. And assigned page 302; 12-35, 36-39, 42.
Period 7/8
Reviwed the methods of writing ratios. Corrected the assignment from yesterday and went over common errors. Introduced the concept of proportions (2 equal ratios) and how to solve a proportion. Students took notes and were given 3 ways to solve proportions; by using the proportion, "cross-product" and algebra, Did some examples and assigned pages 282; 3-10, 37 (all done in class) as well as, 12-31, 32-35, 37-40.

Reviewed the concepts of integers. Why do we have/use negitive numbers. Went over just the process for adding integers. How does having a negitive number in an addition problem effect the sum? Went over the rules for adding "like" sign numbers and "unlike" sign numbers. Worked on Study Guide 6.2 and Practice 6.2. Work was done in class, but work not completed can be picked up after school to take home and complete.
Period 5/6
Reviewed to processes involved in working with ratios and proportions. To catch back up we went over page 808, 1-24 together. As an assignment page 298; all problems was assigned. There will be a quiz tomorrow.

Reviewed the processes for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions. Introduced the area where fractions will most likely be used...measurement. Went over the common units of customary measurement ie, inches, yards, ounces, pounds, pints, gallons. Went over the study guide questions 1-8 together and assigned Practice 5.7. 55 minutes were provided as work time.

Intoduced chapter 6. This chapter revolves around the use of ratios and proportions. Took a few notes from section 6.1. These dealt mostly with writing ratios and finding "unit rate". After some examples assigned page 272; 10-18, 22-35, 36, 38, 39, 40, 42-44.

We have a test over Chapter 5 on Thursday, so we started a review today. Went over the Chapter review starting on page 258 all the way through question 25 in class. We reviewed the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions. Assignment was than page 807; 1-24.
Friday, 1/6 Period 3/4 Reviewed the process for multiplying fractions. Went over some examples from yesterday. Moved on to division of fractions. This is easy because we really don't do it...we multiply by the reciprocal. Making a reciprocal simply means turning the second fraction upside down. Went over questions 1-10 on Study Guide...assigned Practice 5.4 all problems. Period 5/6 Test over Chapter 5. Period 7/8 Reviewed the concept of "clearing the fractions" and went over yesterday's assignment. Included instruction on how to "clear decimals". After doing a number of examples, assigned Practice 5.7 and 5.6; selected problems from both. Thursday, 1/5

Reviewed the processes used for adding and subtractioning fractions and mixed numbers. Rehashed some of the problems from yesterday's assignment. Introduced the process for multiplying fractions. Most imprtant to this is the fact that there is no need to find common denominator. Went over the example problems in the Study Guide (1-7) together in class. After going over examples, assigned 1-20 on Practice B. Incomplete assignments can be picked up after school to take home for completion.

Worked on word problem time/work equations page 262 in the book. Did problems 1-6 from this page together in class. Assigned 7/8 as well as page 262; 1-35 (even). These were review problems for a test on Firday.
Period 7/8
Corrected assignment from Wednesday, this dealt with multiplicative inverse (see yesterday). Reviewed the process for solving equations with fractions. Introduced section 5.7. This section focuses on a technique called "clearing the fractions". Using common denominator you can clear all the fractions in an equation so you can work with all whole numbers. We took notes and did a number of problems together in class. Assigned page 255; 13-21 and example problems 3-5.

Period 3/4
Reviewed the concepts of Section 5.1 which was done yesterday. This included addition and subtraction of fractions with and without common denominators. Today's concept was on the addition and subtraction of mixed numbers. We went over the Study Guide section of the assignment in class. This included working through questions 1-12. After doing examples, assigned Practice 5.2. Note; if your scores are low on these daily assignments you need to make better use of class time and complete assignments.
Period 5/6
Reviewed concepts from Chapter 5 by going over chapter review. This review is intended to be used as a study device at home for the test over chapter 5. This test will be on Friday! Assigned first 15 questions of review to be completed tomorrow ( we did the rest in class; 16-25)
Period 7/8
Introduced section 5.6 from the book. This section focuses on using "multiplicative inverse" to solve equations. Went over a number of examples...remember! You can not divide with fractions...you multiply by the reciprocal (don't divide by 1/2. multiply by 2/1). Assigned worksheet Practice 5.2, problems 1-26. Tuesday, 1/3

Began work on adding and subtracting fractions. This includes fractions with like and unlike denominators. Much of this material was covered in both 5th and 6th grade and such be somewhat of a review. Assigned Study Guide 5.1 and the worksheet that went with it. Students who needed extra help were helped on a one-on-one basis. Students who show a "zero" or low score on Skyward for this assignment made poor use of class time.
Period 5/6
Reviewed the major concepts of Chapter 5. This was done together as a class. Most of these concepts revolved around equations containing fractions. Assigned pages 258-262; problems 1-40.
Period 7/8
Reviewed the major concepts of section 1-4 of Chapter 5. This was done togther in class. This involved going over again how to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions. As I said earlier mush of this is a review of concepts taught in 5th and 6th grade classrooms. Assigned page 258-260; problems-7-10, 12-15, 18-20, 22, 24, 30, 32.

Reviewed the concepts from yesterday. This included putting fractions in simpliest terms, simplyfing fractions and finding equivalent fractions. This was done as a warm up activity. Moved on to improper fractions and mixed numbers. Went over study guide 4.6 and did example together. Assigned practice 4.6 all questions; due in class or picked up after school to complete.
Period 5/6
Reviewed multiplication and division of fractions, as well as "multiplicative inverse". There was no new material today. Reviewed how to clear fractions and decimals from an equation. Assigned Practice 5.6/5.7.
Period 7/8
Reviewed the process of division of fractions (use of multiplicative inverse). Corrected assignment from yesterday...again talked about papers with no work; they are not worth credit! Instructed on how to use "mutiplicative inverse" to solve equations. Did a number of examples in class and assigned page 249; 11-18, 21-29, 30. Show your work!
Wednesday, 12/14
Period 3/4
Today we put the GCF and LCM concepts we have been learning to work. We worked on ordering fractions, simplifying fractions, finding equivalent fractions and creating "mixed number". All of these concepts were introduced in 4th, 5th and 6th grade. We are just reviewing them before we move on to fraction operations. Went over the study packet 4.3/4.5 together and did all the example problems in class. Assigned practice pages 4.3/4.5 as classwork. Most students were done in class. Any student who was not done was encouraged to pick up the work after school to take home and finish.
Period 5/6
Continued to work with fractions in equations. Took some of the problems from yesterday ( page 249 ) and introduced the idea of "clearing the fractions" to make the problems simpilier to solve. This can be a confusing concept when it is first learned, but if you follow the process, it makes computation with fractions faster. The good thing is...you cam still use the processes taught earlier this week if you don't get it. This is just another way to solve fraction equations. Assigned page 256; 13-21 and 22-30 (this was "clearing decimals", a much easier concept.
Period 7/8
Corrected the assignment from yesterday and reveiwed the concepts of fractions multiplication. The key to this was "cross reducing". To get credit for these assignments, you must show your work! Introduced fraction division...which we really don't do. We multiply by the "reciprocal". Simple said this means flipping the second fraction up side down and multiplying rather than dividing. After flipping the second fraction you can again "cross reduce" and multiply straight across afterward. Assigned page 245; 16-28, 30-32.
Tuesday, 12/13
Period 3/4
Reviewed the concepts of factoring and GCF as a warm up activity. From here we moved on to the concept of "Least Common Multiple" (LCM). Went through the study guide 4.4. Reviewed how to find LCM with the same process as finding GCF, just using different numbers. Assigned Practice 4.4B...students who did not complete the work in the 45 minutes in class were encouraged to stop by on their way home to pick up for completion.
Period 5/6
Reviewed the use of reciprocals in fraction operations. Corrected the assignment from pages 239-240 and went over any special issues. Introduced the uses for "multiplicative inverse". In other words using reciprocals in equations where we need inverse operations. Took a few notes and did a number of examples. Assigned page 249; 11-18, 21-32.
Period 7/8
Went back over quiz from yesterday. There were a lot of careless mistakes. If you are having troubles try some of the practices on Classzone.com (where the online book is at). Move on to multiplication of fractions. Key to this is a process called "cross simplifying" or "cross reducung". It makes this much easier. Took a few notes and did a number of examples. Assigned page 239; 8-19, 23-28, 30-32
Monday, 12/12
Period 3/4
Reviewed the concepts of factoring, prime factorization and Greatest Common Factor (GCF). Went through guided materials here in class and did the example problems together. Assigned Worksheets 4.1/4.2 with selected problems to be done in class. Students who did not finish in class are encouraged to pick up the assignment on their way home to complete as homework.
Period 5/6
Today we started by reviewing the concepts of multiplication of fractions. This was done by correcting the assignment from 12/9. Moved on to division of fractions which, in truth, isn't really done. We "multiply by the reciprocal", so instead of dividing by... let's say 1/4, we multiply by 4/1. It's easy! Did a few example problems and assigned page 245; 16-27, 28, 30-35
Period 7/8
Went over the assignment from Friday...This covered all the topics from section 5.1-5.3. Reviewed these topics and had a quiz over section 5.1-5.3. results should be back tomorrow. Also assigned Practice 5.3A. Due tomorrow. Friday, 12/9

Worked on "rules of exponents". Went through the Study Guide and did all the examples. Assigned Practice 4.5 A. There was plenty of time to complete in class and check in on assignments that were not completed on earlier days. Assignment was due in class.

Corrected the quiz from yesterday...students corrected their own. Reviewed some of the topics that there were issues with. Introduced multiplication of fractions. Especially went over the use of simplifying before doing the equation. There was an explanation about why this works better. Assigned page 240; 2-28, 30-35

Reviewed concepts from the first three sections of chapter 5. Went over problems 1-25 on page 807 together. Assigned page 236; 1-25...This was a review for a "quiz" that will likely take place on Monday.

Worked on concepts dealing LCM (Least Common Multiple). Went over the Study Guide 4.4. Showed an easy drop down method for finding LCM. After doing a number of examples, assigned 4,4 Practice A. If this assignment has a low score on Skyward it could be that it was incomplete. Students are encouraged to come after school to pick up late work to complete at home or in homework club.

There was a brief review and a quiz over Sections 5.1-5.3.
Period 7/8
Reviewed the concepts of adding and subtracting fractions form section 5.2 in the book. Went over 10 or so review problems. Today's topic was equivalent fractions. This is a review concept from 5Th and 6Th grade. We went over the Study Guide in class and discussed and created examples for equivalent fractions, fractions in simplest terms and (this was new) doing these same things with fractions containing monomials. Assigned Practice 4.2 A, this was collected and the end of class. Remember...any student wanting to take extra time with the assignment can pick it up at the end of the day to take home or the homework club.

Reviewed the concepts from Monday...adding/subtracting fractions with like denominators. SHOW YOUR WORK! Too many are trying to do steps in their head and making careless mistakes. Make those mixed numbers into improper fractions. Went on to adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. Did a number of examples to put in notes. Assigned page 234; 12-19, 24-31, 33, 36-43. YOU MUST SHOW YOUR WORK FOR CREDIT!

Continued work on Chapter 5. Reviewed the processes for changing a fraction into a decimal and a decimal into a fraction. Introduced section 5.2; adding and subtracting fractions with common denominators. This is a review concept from 5th and 6th grade. Went over pages 226 and 227 in the book and did a number of examples. Went over examples and assigned page 228; problems..10-25, 29-36, 38-40, 46-48.

First we reviewed concepts from last Friday. Worked on concept of greatest common factor (GCF). Went over the study guide and demonstrated how to find GCF easily. Part of the instruction included finding GCF of a monomial. It can be done the same way as finding GCF of whole numbers. Assigned all of practice 4.2, 1 period was given for completion. Students wishing to improve their score are welcome to pick up the assignment before they leave for the day and bring it back the following day.

Introduced chapter 5; Rational Numbers. Took some notes on rational numbers and their meaning. Also, worked with converting decimals to fractions and fractions to decimals. Introduced concepts of factoring, prime factorization and using these concepts with monomials. Went over the Study Guide together in class and completed all the example problems. Assigned worksheet, Practice 4.1 A. Students worked on their own with the goal of completing the assignment in the classroom. Assignments were corrected at the end of period and students were graded on quality and quantity of work completed. Reminder; if you wish to take an assignment home to work further on it, you must pick it up at the end of the day. More credit will be given for further completion.

Tuesday, 11/29 Period 3/4 Last review of 2-step solving of equations. This was a review of chapter 3's most important concept. If this review shows up as a "0" or low score it means that the student did not use class time effectively. This review was a preparation for a test tomorrow! Period 5/6
Went over assignment from 11/28. Went over chapter 4 review. This review went home so that if you have issues you can review at home. Assigned page 210; 1-47 (all). This was used to practice and complement the Chapter 4 review. Remember the test id tomorrow! Period 7/8 Reviewed the assignment from 11/28. This was again a review of the "rules of exponents" which were covered on 11/23 and 11/28. These rules should be in your notes. Introduced scientific notation (section 4.7). Took notes on how to write and convert numbers into scientific notation. After going over examples, assigned page 206; 13-30, 34, 36, 40-43, 44-47. This is the last section for chapter 4....there will be a test on Friday. A review will go home on Thursday. Monday, 11/28 Period 3/4 Worked on reviewing decimal operations combined with integers and 1-step inverse operation. We have been working with whole numbers of the last few weeks so it was time to review the decimal. Assigned was set for a 45 minute period and students were graded on the problems correctly completed in this time. A low score on Skyward for this assignment means that class time was wasted. Period 5/6 Reviewed the concepts of sections 4.6 and 4.7 by going over the assignment from 11/23. This was a review of negative exponents, the exponent of "0" and scientific notation. Used page 806 to review the most recent concepts. After this assigned pages 210-212; 1-47. This is the beginning of a review of Chapter 4. There will be a test on Wednesday. Period 7/8 Reviewed the rules of exponents from 11/22. Added the rules of negative exponents and the exponent of "0". Took notes on these rules and did a number of examples. Took a short break from chapter 3 today and reviewed "distributing" and "simplifying". Went over a number of problems breaking them down to distribute; first and simplify; second. An assignment of 10 problems was given and collected at the end of period. Students were graded on what was correctly completed. In the second half of the period, continued to work on concept review of chapter 3.

Wrapped up the rules of exponents by correcting the assignment from yesterday. Today's topic was "scientific notation". Took some notes which consisted of mostly examples of scientific notation. Assigned page 206-207; 13-30, 35, 36, 44-47.

Reviewed GCF and LCM by correcting and going over yesterday's assignment. Reviewed the processes to find each. Went back to notes and examples from last Friday on the rules of exponents. Added to the notes and examples. Worked off of page 196, this was last Friday's assignment and assigned Practice 4.5; all.

Took a break from the chapter 3 review to work on "order of operation" for the day. On their work students have made a number of order of operation mistakes. Students were given a lot of examples and plenty of time to complete the assignment in class. It was therefore collected at the end of class time. First of all, for periods 5/6 and 7/8 chapter 3 test results were past back. (Period 3/4 is already working on a reteach of chapter 3.) The delay in doing this was simply due to conferences and the number of students who were absent on the day it was given. If your desire is to improve your score you must due the following things.

Tuesday, 11/1 Periods 3/4 & 7/8 Corrected assignment that dealt with using inverse operations of multiplication and division to solve one-step inequalities. This was section 3.5 of the book. Today was about putting in all together...inequalities, two-step solving and having variables on both sides of the symbol (<,>,<,>). This brings together all of chapter 3 (section 1-5!). Did a number of examples and assigned page 151-153; 3-9 (in class), 10-22, 25-30, 31 Period 5/6 Corrected assignment from pages 152-153. Used examples of all the inequalities. This is done just like equations with the exception of one rule, but it's a big one...WHEN YOU DIVIDE OR MULTIPLY ACROSS AN INEQUALITY WITH A NEGATIVE NUMBER, YOU MUST FLIP THE SIGN! Example; x/-3 > 7...to solve you must times by -3 -3(x/-3) > -3(7)...so "flip the sign" x < -21...that's all there is to it, but only when multiply and dividing by a negative number.

Friday, 10/28 Periods 3/4 & 7/8 Reviewed the concepts of "solving inequalities using addition and subtraction". This included graphing of the solution. Assignment was worksheet; Practice 3.4; all the problems plus the back side of the worksheet. Period 5/6 Reviewed the concepts of "solving inequalities using multiplication and division". This included going over the assignment on pages 146-147 (see 10/27). Assigned worksheet; Practice 3.5 all problems plus the backside. Remember no graphing! Thursday, 10/27 Periods 3/4 & 7/8 Went over the concepts of sections 3.1 to 3.3 by going over the results for the quiz we took yesterday. This was a chance to see where each student needs to have some clarification. If fact over the next 3 lessons most will find that all the steps are done the same way. Along with solving we also discussed "graphing the answer". Examples were done in class. Today we wrapped up the discussion on solving 2-step equations and moved on solving equations with variables on both sides for instance; 9x + 7 = -18 - 4x. The only new step to solving this is to remove the variable from one side or the other. You could do this by subtracting 9x from both sides which would give you 7 = -27 -4x or by adding 4x to both sides which would give you 13x + 7 = -18. From both of these equations you simply follow the 2-step solution process. Assignment was page 133-134; 3-8, 11-22 odd. Period 5/6 Corrected assignment from 10/20, pages 133-134. This section, was you remember, add the the extra issue of what to do when there are varibles on both sides of the equation. In simpliest terms...you need yo get rid of one of them (see yesterday's discussion notes). We continued on this topic today while adding in some word and geometry problems. Assignment was worksheet Practice 3.3, problems; all! Also, this concept brings us to mid-chapter. A quick review and a quiz are probably on the horizon. We went over the assignment from 10/18; Practice 3.1. This again was a rehash of the 2-step process. A key to start remembering on the more difficult problems like 23 = 10 - 5n, is that (10) and (-5n) are just terms and can be written in another order; -5n + 10 = 23. The "+" sign in front of 10 comes from the fact that it is a positive number and is being added in the equation. In other words; 10 - 5n = (-5n) + 10. So the first step is easy! Subtract 10 (from both sides of 23 = 10 - 5n. It would be great (and boring) if all we had to do is focus on 2-step solutions, but we need to start bringing it all together...distributing...simplifying...and solving. This is what we began to focus on today. Problems such as 13t - 7- 10t = 2, which requires simplifying (combineing like terms) before you solve. Also 4(x + 5) = 16, which requires distributing before you solve. Lastly, problems like -5g - 2(8 - g) = -61, which requires distributing and simplifying before you solve. We went over a number of examples in class and assigned page 127; 11-19 odd, 20, 22-31 odd, 33-36. You must show all work for credit.

Reveiwed some topics from both chapters 1 and 2. These are concepts that we'll need in chapter 3. Assigned worksheets Chapter 2; Cumulative practice and went over which problems to do in class.
Also...Chapter 2 test results should be posted soon on Skyward. If you didn't do as well as you hoped (chapter 2 always tends to be a tough one, because of all the new concepts) relax. There will be an opportunity to improve your score next week by making corrections on the test. I'll go over this in class on Monday. But be advised, you'll need to attend one of my special help sessions in order to improve your score. Sorry, no quick fix on this one! Again, I'll explain on Monday.

Tuesday, 10/11 Today was all about preparation for tomorrow's test; Chapter 2. We went over all the notes that students should have to understand the questions on the test. We than went over a chapter review that went home tonight so that students can study. For the review, on a separate sheet, we went over the strategies for solving all the equations and what the solutions are. Again these pieces are designed with the idea that they can be used for study. Assignment was page 804; 1-20. Monday, 10/10 Reviewed all the concepts of chapter 2. This included going over Friday's assignment as well as going over notes in class. We did a class review by doing some timed problems from page 109. These covered all the concepts in the chapter. Assignment was page 804; 20-51. There will be a test review tomorrow before the test on Wednesday!
Following this message, you will find a summary of the lessons for this week. This change in presentation is due to the fact that I will out of the building from Tuesday to Friday due to a death in my family. It is my hope that the guest instructor who comes in will be able to carry out these lessons and keep the class on track. I apologize for how this is being done. I intended to return to Stevens on Monday, 10/10. Upon my return I will assess how things have gone and decide on the appropriate date for the Chapter 2 test.
Monday, 10/3 Corrected and collected assignment from Friday, 9/30. This was page 84; 1-22. This was one last review of the concepts of distributing and simplifying before moving on. Notes on these concepts were reviewed on Friday and should be in everyone s notebook. Introduced section 2.5, Solving Equations Using Addition and Subtraction. Went over pages 91-92 in class. In our notebooks we defined the terms; inverse operation and equivalent equations. Also we added notes and examples for the Subtraction Property of Equality and the Addition Property of Equality. We used the examples on these pages to practice the coconcepts OWING
Tuesday, 10/4 Corrected and collected assignment from pages 93-95. We reviewed the concepts from yesterday and went back over the notes that were taken. Introduced section 2.6 in the book; Solving Equations Using Multiplication or Division. This meant reviewing inverse operation and equivalent equation, in the context of multiplication and division. Added to your notes the Division Property of Equality and Multiplication Property of Equality. Added to our notes example of how to solve these equations. After going over some examples, assigned pages 99-101; 3-7, 8-23, 24, 25, 28-33, 36…You need to show all your work, just like in the book and done in class for credit.
Wednesday, 10/5 Corrected and collected assignment from pages 99-101. Reviewed the concepts from yesterday by going back over the notes and examples that were put in notebooks. Also reviewed the concepts of Monday with the notes that were taken. Introduced section 2.7; Decimal Operations and Equations with Decimals. There is no new concepts with this section. It is simply doing the same as Monday and Tuesday except the arithmetic is with decimals. This also included using the integer rules of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division (these rules are in your notes) with negative decimals. Did some examples to put in notes from pages 102-104; showing all the work. After doing some examples; assigned pages 105-107; 3-11, 12-35 (even only), 37, 38, 39-41, 42-44, 47. You need to show all your work, just like in the book and done in class for credit.
Thursday, 10/6 Corrected and collected assignment from pages 102-104. Reviewed all the concepts of the last three sections by going over the notes and again looking at the examples of how the process of solving is done. After going over some examples assigned review packet 2.5-2.6-2.7; selected problems. You need to show all your work, just like in the book and done in class for credit. Keep in mind that 2.7 was the last section of the chapter and a test will be coming soon, probably by Wednesday of next week.
Friday, 10/7 Corrected and collected assignment from Thursday. Went back over notes for distributing, simplifying and all the solving equations with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. After going over some examples, assigned page 108; 1-47 all. Friday, 9/30 Corrected assignment from pages 87-88 and reviewed the concepts of section 2.4. This mostly had to do with "deciphering" words into equations and checking to see if a given value for a variable was the solution. Results of yesterday's quiz showed a lot of misunderstanding about the distributive property and simplifying equations (though there were a number of 100% scores...CONGRATS to those people) so today we went over these concepts one more time. We reviewed the notes on these concepts. Which many did not use. We went over every question on quiz, step-by-step and put this info in our notebooks. As an assignment we did the in book quiz which is on page 84; 1-22. Thursday, 9/29 Corrected assignment from Wednesday. This included going over the distributive property and simplifying variable expressions one more time. Quiz over these concepts was given. Also worked on "deciphering equations and solutions" (section 2.4 in the book). This is just as it sounds, turning equations into english language and checking to see that solutions to the equations fit! After doing several problems in class, assigned pages 87-88; 3-6, 8-34. Wednesday, 9/28 Reviewed the concepts of Monday (9/26) and Tuesday (9/27). Corrected the assignment from yesterday and did several more examples of distributing and simplifying. This included going over the notes for a second time. As review, assigned worksheet Practice 2.2/2.3; selected problems. Tuesday, 9/27 Reviewed the concepts from 9/26; "the distributive property", "equivalent numerical expressions" and "equivalent variable expressions". These terms should be in your notebook with examples. Remember...we use these on tests. Choosing not to take notes = choosing to fail! Corrected assignment from pages 73-74 and collected. Today's topic was "simplfying variable expressions". There were several important things to have in your notes. In the expression...12x + 9st - 6 - 12st + 3s The terms are the parts of the expression that are separated by addition or subtraction. In the expression above the terms are 12x, 9st, -6, -12st and 3s I could have said +12x, +9st, -6, -12st and +3s, but we usually don't write the plus sign when it is the first operation in an expression. Some of these terms have variables (letters) in them and some don't. The terms without variables are the constants. In my expression the only constant is -6. The terms that are not constants are a number followed by a letter or letters. These numbers before the letters are called coefficients. Again, in my expression the coefficients are 12, 9 and -12. Like terms are terms that have the same variables in them. In my expression, 9st and -12st are like terms. Like terms can be added together to "simplify a variable expression". Took notes, did a number of examples and assigned pages 80-81; 3-30, 32, 33-35, 37. Monday, 9/26 Handed back chapter 1 test results. Improvements in scores can be made by;
Making corrections does not guaranty any grade. In other words you won't get an A for making correction. It only guarantees that I look at a grade enhancement for the test. Collected assignment from Friday, 9/23. Reviewed the concepts of "operations and properties" as well as "conversion factors". These things should be in your notes. To days' topic was "the distributive property". This property breaks the rules of order of operation a bit, but it becomes necessary when trying to solve a variable equation with paratheses. The Distributive Property lets you multiply a sum by multiplying each addend separately and then add the products. The Distributive Property helps with mental math and should be taught to children as a method to multiply much quicker in their heads. Children need lots of experience using the Distributive Property. Children make greater 'connections' with the ability to use the distributive propertly for mental math. For instance: Let's say I have to quickly multiply: 4 x 53 In my mind, I can compute the answer of 4x50 quickly (200) then I add (4x3) 12 to give me 212. That's why using the Distributive property can come in handy! Let's try another: 12x19 - Well 12 x 20 is easy, it's 240 But, I added one more 12 than I needed, so I'll take it away from 240 to give me 228. One more! 4 x 27 Students should have lots of opportunity to break numbers apart using the distributive property which greatly assists the mental math process. The Distributive Property in Algebra: The Distributive Property is handy to help you get rid of parentheses. a(b + c) = ab + ac Did a number of examples and assigned pages 73-75; 3-11, 12-35, 38-40, 45, 46-49. Friday, 9/23 Corrected the assignment from 9/22. Reviewed the properties and the operations in section 2.1 of the book. Introduced the concept of "conversion factor". This is the ability to convert from one form of measurement to another. Basically, this means deciding between the use of multiplication and division. Did some examples and assigned Practice 2.1..all problems. Thursday, 9/22 Corrected problem solving assignment from 9/21; Problem Solving 1.5-1.7. The major concept was really the area formula (l x w = A), but you also had to set up a plan, show work and read carefully! Today we began chapter 2. There were a lot of notes because the section 2.1 beginnings with "Properties and Operations". Went over these in class and worked with some examples. Assigned pages 66-68 Also...Chapter 1 test scores are on Skyward. They will be handed back after everyone takes it. Class average was 88%...excellent! Wednesday, 9/21 Test over Chapter 1. Notes and calculators were used. Also collected assignment from page 56 and test review from 9/20. Assignment...after test; Worksheet 1.5/1.7 Problem Solving only do marked problems. Show all work for credit. Tuesday, 9/20 Corrected and went over assignment from 9/19. This was a review of order of operation. This is a big part of the test tomorrow. Today we reviewed all the concepts from the chapter and checked notes. In doing this we handed out and went over a practice test that parallels the test that will be given tomorrow. We will do this before every test throughout the year. Assigned page 56; 1-39 selected problems. Monday, 9/19 Went over assignment from 9/16. This meant reviewing rules of operations with integers. Collect assignment. Last week we finished the content of Chapter One so over the next two days we will be reviewing some of the "weak" areas in order to be best prepared for a test on Wednesday, 9/21. Today we recovered order of operation and working with word problems that require the correct use of order of operation. Worked over and assigned page 59 problems 1-3 in the book as well as worksheet Practice 1.3, all due tomorrow! Friday, 9/16 We corrected the assignment from 9/15 which involved multiplying and dividing integers. We reviewed all the rules dealing with operations with integers (+, -, x, ÷). Assigned review worksheets with selected problems. This assignment is due Monday, 9/19. Thursday, 9/15 Went over assignment from pages 36-37 from Wednesday. Reviewed from notes the rules for subtracting integers as well as adding integers. These rules should be in your notes so that you can review them if you forget. Today we took the step to the next set of operations with integers; multiplication and division. These step are done at once because, unlike addition and subtraction, multiplication and division follow the same rules... Multiplying Integers In the product below, both numbers are positive, so we just take their product. In the product below, both numbers are negative, so we take the product of their absolute values. In the product of (-7) × 6, the first number is negative and the second is positive, so we take the product of their absolute values, which is |-7| × |6| = 7 × 6 = 42, and give this result a negative sign: -42, so (-7) × 6 = -42. In the product of 12 × (-2), the first number is positive and the second is negative, so we take the product of their absolute values, which is |12| × |-2| = 12 × 2 = 24, and give this result a negative sign: -24, so 12 × (-2) = -24. To divide a pair of integers if both integers have the same sign, divide the absolute value of the first integer by the absolute value of the second integer. Examples: In the division below, both numbers are positive, so we just divide as usual. In the division below, both numbers are negative, so we divide the absolute value of the first by the absolute value of the second. In the division (-100) ÷ 25, both number have different signs, so we divide the absolute value of the first number by the absolute value of the second, which is |-100| ÷ |25| = 100 ÷ 25 = 4, and give this result a negative sign: -4, so (-100) ÷ 25 = -4. In the division 98 ÷ (-7), both number have different signs, so we divide the absolute value of the first number by the absolute value of the second, which is |98| ÷ |-7| = 98 ÷ 7 = 14, and give this result a negative sign: -14, so 98 ÷ (-7) = -14. Simple put the rule for both multiplication and division of integers is this - If the signs are the same the answer is positive if the signs are different the answer if negative! This is totally unlike addition and subtraction. Assignment pages 44-46; Problems 3-11, 12-23, 26, 27, 29-34, 37, 38-41 Wednesday, 9/14 Corrected the assignment from 9/13, adding integers. It seemed that the few who had problems did not follow the rules for adding unlike signs (see 9/13). These rules are in your notebook. We will review them constantly. Today was about subtracting integers. This is a much easier concept...Why? Because we don't really subtract integers. We "add the opposite." (Opposite...a term also in your notes.) Examples: In the following examples, we convert the subtracted integer to its opposite, and add the two integers. After changing the second addend to the opposite, you just follow the addition rules (see 9/13)Note that the result of subtracting two integers could be positive or negative. In class, wrote these as notes, did a few examples and assigned pages 36-37; 1-11, 12-31, 33, 35-38, 39-42, 43-46, 48...Remember, "You must write out the problem for credit." Tuesday, 9/13 Corrected the assignment from 9/12 (word problems). We'll come back to these word problem concepts over and over again throughout the school year just as a review or problem solving strategies. Today the focus was adding integers. This is an easy process...you just need to follow the rules! 1) When adding integers of the same sign, we add their absolute values, and give the result the same sign. Examples: 2 + 5 = 7 2) When adding integers of the opposite signs, we take their absolute values, subtract the smaller from the larger, and give the result the sign of the integer with the larger absolute value. Example: 8 + (-3) = ? Example: 8 + (-17) = ? Example: -22 + 11 = ? We wrote the rules down in class notebooks and went over some examples. Assignment was Pages 31-33; Problems - 3-12, 15-38, 41, 45, 47-50 Monday, 9/12 Reviewed concepts of integers from Friday. Reviewed all the main ideas covered in the 1st week, after which there was a quiz. These scores should be on Skyward later this afternoon/evening. Went over some strategies for problem solving with "word problems". Did some examples and assigned worksheet Problem Solving 1.1-1.4, selected problems. Friday, 9/9 The topic of the day was integers. This included defining them, absolute value and opposites. We went over a number of examples and assigned pages 24-25; problems # 4-15, 18-41, 43-50, 51. Due Monday. Thursday, 9/8 Corrected the assignment from yesterday on Powers and Exponents. It seems that we already have some folks who aren't getting the idea...you need to get things done and turned in. Without doing this your chance for success becomes limited. Anyway...today's topic was Order of Operation. This is a HUGHLY important concept. You must follow the rules in order to get the correct answer in equations with more than one step. We took notes on the rules and went through some examples. Assignment was pages 18-19; Problems; 1-8, 10-27, 28, 32-34 (period 5/6 will have 15 minutes to work on assignment in class due to time lost to fire drill). Wednesday, 9/7 Powers and exponents were the topics for the day (pages 10-11 in the book). On this topic we took notes and discussed how and why exponents are used. Examples of topics discussed were done in class. Assigned pages 12-13; 1-11, 13-28, 30-33, 36. Also today, the first assignments were recorded on Skyward. A zero "0" for an assignment means it was either not handed in or it was incomplete. Incompletes are noted with the assignment. Late work is only good for two weeks, after that it remains a "0". Assignments are practice...without practice you will have a difficult time on the tests! Tuesday, 9/6 Topic for the day was "Expressions and Variables". I lot of this was review and simply learning some of the "jargon" of algebra. Notes were taken (covered pages 5-6 of the book). Assignment came from pages 7-9 in the book. We did 1-11 & 32 together in class as examples. Assigned problems 12-31, 32-37, 41-48, 51. Due 9/7 Friday, 9/2 Set up notebooks, these will be invaluable on tests. Checked out books and went over how to answer problems and set up papers. All of these means that as of Tuesday we will be ready to roll. So make sure you have all the materials you need for class; paper and pencils! September 1... Okay, here we go. So... no assignment today. Expectations sheets and rules went home today.
