News and Notes from the Computer Lab and Library
Thanks for all your support of the computer program and library media program here at BOOK FAIR The annual book fair will be held at the Montgomeryville Barnes and Noble Store on Wednesday, November 11, 2009, beginning at 6:30PM. Browse the Barnes and Noble store for books, CD’s, and DVD’s for your children and families. A percentage of all your purchases is earned by HMS. Our Glee Club and Band will perform and Mr. Hayden will have a story time. It will be a great evening to support literacy, our arts program, and take care of some of that Christmas shopping. Look for more details coming home in the coming weeks. Remember: ALL purchases qualify for credit to our Book Fair – children’s books, adult books, food purchases, CD purchases, DVD purchases – whether for children OR adults!
FYI - has your child been looking for the Microsoft Encarta Online Encyclopedia to complete some research this week? trouble finding the site? Well, it's not that you are doing anything wrong... Microsoft has announced that as of November 1, 2009, they are getting out of the encyclopedia business after 10+ years. Microsoft states that "the move reflects the change in the way people obtain and use reference material". I, for one, am sorry to see it go. It provided a reliable and safe reference site for our students to use.
Have you returned the specially formatted keyboards that your fourth grader was given when they began the intensive keyboarding classes in September? Remember, it is possible to purchase the keyboard if you prefer. Now is the time to either purchase or return it.
Reading Olympics is up and running for the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. Our next two scheduled meeting are Tuesday, November 10th and Tuesday, November 24th at 11:30AM – during the lunch and recess period of the day. The team’s goal is to have 9 books read - one from each member of the team by our November 10th meeting! Everyone was excited to get started with a good book!
Several computer projects are either wrapping up or getting started by the various classes. Our explorer’s graveyard is on display in the computer lab hallway compliments of the seventh grade. And the kindergartner’s computer work is on display in the same hallway. Everyone was surprised at how many pictures they could find that started with the “p” sound. Eighth grade has completed their research on the flag of the
Second grade has begun word processing their apple and worm story and the third graders should have come home with a new sign for their room created on the computer using Print Shop. First grade is word processing a scarecrow poem and adding graphics – quite an accomplishment for them.
Fifth and sixth grade is having some fun with digital pictures. Look for “thoughtful” pictures and captions of our fifth graders soon hanging in the hall created with Microsoft Publisher. And the sixth grade is using a new piece of software Photo Story to create a photo story of the Phillies and the playoffs. We hope to be able to end our story with a World Series Parade.
Although fourth graders have been requested to return their specially configured keyboards it doesn’t mean that they are not busy typing. They continue to work on their keyboarding skills each week in computer class. Right now they are also working on learning all they can about Dav Pilkey – author of the Captain Underpants series of books by searching through his very well done web site.
