I offer afterschool tutoring and enrichment for our team. Tutoring is on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 3:00-5:00, and enrichment is on Monday and Friday for the same time. I will walk the students up to car line at 5:00, but of course you can pick up your child any time before 5:00 simply by coming to my classroom (612).

Goals for Language Arts:

  1. Each student will write and illustrate a book.
  2. I will be reading some novels, including John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men with the students. We will be responding to the ideas and concepts found in these examples of classic American literature.
  3. We will read a lot of books! Reading Counts is one of my most important classroom strategies. My goal for our classes is to have over half the students in the Million Word Club. To this end, I have expanded my classroom library by over 150 books. The CWMS Media Center (library) also has an incredibly wide selection of Reading Counts books.
  4. We will use Study Island to make sure that we are as prepared as we can be for the EOGs. Study Island is a fantastic program, that completely covers the NC Course of Study for Language Arts, and can also be accessed from home, if a student chooses to do so.
  5. We have no homework, in the traditional sense. The only "homework" I assign is that each student needs to read approximately 30 minutes each evening from their Reading Counts book.

Progress toward our goals:

  1. The students have completed the text for their books, and are working on the completion of the illustrations.
  2. We have read and responded to three different novels. We will begin another novel class novel soon.
  3. We are on pace to have many students finish with 1 million or more words read this year.
  4. We are working on S.I. to both remediate and enhance student progress toward our curricular goals.
  5. I am offering after-school tutoriing on Tuesday and Thursday, to allow those students who have struggled to stay disciplined in their 30 minutes of reading, the time they need to achieve the number of words I require them to read each quarter.

Further Notes:

  • We have begun working on our second content-based writing assessment. The prompts are related to PE (specifically, the Olympics) and Art (Leonardo Da Vinci), and the  text of the prompts can be found below.
  • Don't forget to check out our class wiki page at http://6wikila.pbwiki.org. Further information about the current writing assessment (as well as the text of the prompts) can be found there.
