THE PARABLES OF JESUS

Sower of Seeds

A farmer scattered some seeds across the field. Some seeds fell on the hard path.  Birds came down and ate them.  Some fell on thin soil. The plants started to grow, but because they didn’t have deep roots, they soon died in the hot sun.  Some seeds fell among thorns. The plants grew, but were soon choked by the thorns.  Finally, some seeds fell on good, rich soil.  These plants grew and produced a good harvest.

The seeds on the hard path are like the people with hard hearts who won’t accept God’s word.  The devil will quickly make them forget about God’s message.

The seeds on thin soil are like the people who are happy to receive God’s word, but when it gets difficult to follow God, they give up.

The seeds among thorns are like the people who are full of worries and only care about the pleasures of this world.  These concerns choke God’s word in their hearts.

The seeds in rich soil are like the people whose hearts and minds are ready to hear God’s word and to obey him.  Their lives will produce a good harvest!

The Lost Sheep

Jesus told a parable to teach about God’s mercy.  Once there was a shepherd with 100 sheep.  When he saw that one was lost, he left the 99 to look for that one lost sheep. When he finally found his sheep, he put it on his shoulders and brought it back home. He had a feast to celebrate.  Jesus taught that there’s more happiness in heaven over one lost person who returns to God than 99 good people who don’t need to change their ways.

The Workers in the Vineyard

Jesus told a parable of an owner of a vineyard who went to the market-place to find workers.  He went several times during the day looking for men for his grape harvest.  At the end of the day he called all the men over to pay them, starting with the workers who were hired last.  Each man was paid the same amount.  The men who were hired first complained and said they should get more money because they worked the longest.  The master said, “Didn’t we agree on this amount?  I want to give these other workers the same amount.  Can’t I do what I want with my money? Or are you jealous because I am generous?”  Jesus told this parable to teach his followers that the people who think they are first will end up last in God’s kingdom and the people who are last will be first.

The Prodigal Son

Jesus told a parable to explain God’s forgiveness.  There was a father who had two sons.  One day the younger son came to him and asked for his share of the inheritance.  So the father divided the land and gave the son his share. The son went far away and spent all his money on wild living, so he had to get a job feeding pigs.  He realized that he could have a better life if he returned to his father and worked for him as a servant.  When the father saw his son returning, he ran out to him.  The father celebrated his son, who was lost and is now found. This parable shows that God is always willing to forgive us if we return to him and say that we’re sorry.

The Good Samaritan

When asked, “Who is our neighbor?” Jesus told this parable.  A man was walking down the road and robbers beat him, took his belongings, and left him for dead.  A priest and a Levite saw him, but passed by on the other side, ignoring his pain. Then a Samaritan saw him and had compassion for him.  He bandaged his wounds, took him to an inn, and gave the innkeeper money, telling him to take care of the hurt man until he returned to the inn.  Jesus told this parable to show us how we should treat our neighbor.

THE MIRACLES OF JESUS

Wedding Feast at Cana

Jesus went to a wedding at Cana with his disciples. There was no more wine left at the wedding. Mary told Jesus because she didn’t want the bride and the groom to be embarrassed.  She also told the servants to do whatever Jesus told them to do.  Jesus told the servants to fill up some jars with water and to pour it out for the chief guest. When they were pouring the water, it turned into wine. The chief guest said, “Most people serve the good wine first and the bad wine last, but you’ve saved the best wine for last.”  This was Jesus' first miracle.

The Multiplication of the Loaves

Once Jesus was preaching to a large crowd and the people got hungry. The disciples told Jesus to send the people away so they could find something to eat.  Jesus told them to feed the people themselves.  Then Andrew saw a boy with five loaves and two fish. Jesus held up the food and thanked God for the gift of food. The food that Jesus blessed was enough to feed over 5,000 people. After the meal, each apostle had a basket full of food left over.

Jesus Walks on Water

Jesus’ disciples were on a boat when a big storm struck them. The disciples were scared. Then they saw a shadow and thought it was a ghost. They heard a familiar voice that said, “Don’t be frightened.” Peter hopped off the boat and began to walk on the water toward his master. Then Peter started to notice the strong winds and the waves and he began to drown.  Jesus grabbed Peter’s wrist and pulled him back up.  “Why did you doubt me, Peter?” he asked.  After Peter and Jesus returned to the boat, the storm died down.
