We are using an exciting program created by Larry Bell.  "12 Powerful Words" is a song with movements that helps students remember basic key words from standardized tests.  Please review these with your child and encourage them to share the song. :)
  1. Trace - List in steps
  2. Analyze - Break apart
  3. Infer - Read between the lines
  4. Evaluate - Judge
  5. Formulate - Build and create
  6. Describe - Tell all about
  7. Support - Back up with details
  8. Explain - Tell how
  9. Summarize - Give the short version
  10. Compare - All the ways they are alike
  11. Contrast - All the ways they are different
  12. Predict - What will happen next
 
We have also introduced Reading and Math word problem-solving strategies!
              UNRAAVEL
READING-
U- underline the title
N- now predict passage
R- run through and number the paragraphs
A- are you reading the questions?
A- are the important words circled?
     (write down their meaning)
V- venture through the passage
E- eliminate
L- let the questions be answered, and write the paragraph # where you found the answers
DOUBLE CHECK YOUR WORK

MATH-
U- underline the question
N- now predict what you think you need to do to solve the problem
R- read the word problem
A- are the important words circled?
      (especially clue words)
A- apply the step(s) you chose to solve the problem
V- verify your answer (is it reasonable; does it make sense?)
E- eliminate wrong answers
L- let the answer stay or rework the problem
