Dear Families, We are learning so many important skills in third grade this year! I am so excited to work with your children as we explore so many exciting topics in Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies. They have been trying very hard, and are already showing me they are ready to work! In Reading, we focus on several different topics. First, we practice fluency as we try to make our reading more smooth and enjoyable to listen to. Also, comprehension is a big portion of our reading block. We use various texts we have read, and then go back into them to make sense of what we are reading,. Finally, writing includes story writing as well as responding to a text in a journal. The students are able to explain their connections to a book, and how the book makes them feel. They have been doing a great job with this. In math, the students are focusing on certain topics each week. Some of what we have covered so far is place value, addition and subtraction, regrouping, money, and problem solving. They have a math journal which encourages them to explain how they came up with their answers and tells what stratgeies they chose to use. We practice the addition and subtraction math facts each week as well. Science and Social Studies will include many interesting topics this year. For Science, we will study rocks and minerals and matter. In Social Studies our major units will be map skills, Manchester, and Connecticut. As always social behaviors are a very big piece of our day in the classroom. We focus on respect for others and their property. The classroom community focuses on staying calm and expressing yourself when you need help. We work on helping each other and trusting each other to be good friends. Please continue reading with your children at home, as it will make such an incredible impact on their shcool experience. Thank you for all of your help and contant support. Please contact me with any questions, problems, or concerns. Sincerely, Mrs. DeLany |
