Ms. Falotico
8th Grade
 English Language Arts

What is LITERATURE?
Literature is anything written. It can be an essay, a short story, a novel, a poem or a note you passed to your friend in class! Yep, even that is literature!

In my class, students explore many types of literature such as:
fables
short stories
novels
poetry
essays
plays
Students will learn the characteristics of many different genres while allowing the literature to take them to lands far away!
Of course, reading is not the only part of a Language Arts class; notice the word ART! Students will learn to express themselves through the art of words, focusing on organization, focus and elaboration in their papers. Students will write a variety of expressive works in and out of class to help expand their writing capabilities. Some of these written expressions consist of:
- problem/solution -students will have the opportunity to explain the urgency of major world problems and offer their own solutions to these problems.
- poetry- students will dabble in not only writing poetry, but also brushing up on their public speaking skills as they read their works aloud in Ms Falotico's one-of-a-kind coffee house!
-compare/contrast- students will analyze several characters from a variety of short stories. They will have the opportunity to compare themselves to a character from a story demonstrating similarities and differences between themselves and the character.
WORD SKILLS
"Who uses big words?"
Smart people use big words. Through the Word Skills program students will learn to dissect those big, scary, unfamiliar words when they run into them, instead of skipping over them and possibly missing major points of the writing. This program is designed to help students with reading comprehension and vocabulary.
