Ms. Falotico                    8th Grade
 English Language Arts

2nd Quarter

Students will learn to analyze and evaluate arguments in literature. We will learn to create our own arguments and put them into writing. Students will also continue to explore literature and the characteristics of different genres.

READING LOGS
Each student has a reading folder, which has their reading log stapled to one side and their assigned reading list stapled to the other. Students should chose a book from their reading list to do their monthly book project on. Students should be reading 30 minutes each night and having a parent/guardian sign off that the reading was completed.
Independent reading is crucial in the education of young adults. It increases vocabulary, background knowledge, reading fluency and independent thinking. Please continue to encourage your child to read on a nightly basis and ask them to tell you about their book. Reading logs are due weekly! (on Fridays, or the last day of the week)

BOOK PROJECT CHOICES

Projects are due the 15th of every month (If the 15th is a weekend, project is due the next school day)

1

Design a full page advertisement for a magazine to promote the sale of the book that you read. Include key information like the title, author, characters, plot summary and other things that will entice someone to read the book.

2

Make a map of the main setting(s) of the book. Plot the events of the story on the map. Make sure the map is large enough for us to read the main events clearly. Attach a legend to your map, and write a statement that explains the importance of each event indicated on your map.

3

Complete a series of five drawings (like a comic strip) that show five of the major events in the plot of the book. Write captions for each drawing so that the illustrations can be understood by someone who did not read the book.

4

Select one character from the book you read who demonstrates qualities of a hero or heroine. List these qualities and write a one page description explaining why you think they are heroic.

5

Make a “wanted poster for a character in the book .Include: a drawing of the character, a physical description of the character, the character's misdeeds, information about the character that you think is important, and the reward offered for the capture of the character.

6

Make a collage that represents the major events, characters, plot and themes of the book you read. Use pictures and words cut from magazines in your collages. (remember, a good collage leaves no “empty spaces" on the paper)

7

Make a time line of the major events in the book you read. Be sure the divisions on the time line reflect the time periods in the plot. Use drawings or magazine cutouts to illustrate the events along the line.

8

Retell the plot of the book you read by making a short story book that would appeal to a first or second grader (a children's book.) Be sure that the vocabulary you use is appropriate for that age group.

9

Create a board game based on the novel you read. Your game must include directions and working pieces. In your instructions include the purpose of the game, or the goal, and explain how it is related to the book.

 10

Make a story box using a shoe box, pizza box, etc. Collect or make items that relate to the plot, themes, characters, etc. of the book you read. Your story box should be three dimensional and should represent a specific scene or setting of the novel. Include a brief explanation of the significance of what your box is portraying.

11

Create a “Who’s Who  booklet for the characters of the book you read. Give each character their own page, include a drawing and description of that character, along with their role in the story.

12

Write a small newspaper revolving around the novel you read. Include articles, a table of contents or legend, photographs and other elements of a newspaper.

13

Complete each of the following eight ideas, with material you gained from the book you read, in a creative way:  “This book made me wish that...realize that...

 decide that...wonder about....see that...believe that...feel that.... hope that...

14

Make a book jacket for the book. Include the title, author, an illustration, brief summary and the publishing company of the book.

15

Write a letter to a friend about the book you read. Explain why you liked or did not like the book. Include at least two reasons and support for those reasons.

16

Make a mobile showing different characters or scenes from the book. On one side of each of the hanging pieces you should have an illustration, and on the other side a brief description of that illustration and its significance.
