Notes for the Week of September 15-19, 2008 Math Vocabulary (Test will be on September 24th) Digits - any of the symbols 0, 1, 2 ,3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Place Value - the value assigned to the place that a digit occupies Standard Form - a number written with digits Example: 5,821 Expanded Form - a number written as the sum of its place value parts Example: 5,000 + 800 + 20 + 1 Word Form - a number written out in words Example: five thousand eight hundred twenty-one Identity (zero) Property of Addition - adding any number and 0 equals that number Example: 5 + 0 = 5 Commutative Property of Addition - the order of the numbers does not change the answer Example: 5 + 1 = 1 + 5 Associative Property of Addition - the way the numbers are grouped does not change the answer Example: 5 + (2 + 1) = (5 + 2) + 1
This week's Vocabulary Words (Test will be on Friday) fortunate - lucky memorized - past tense; the ability to remember produce - farm products; that which is made suffering - feeling pain or loss distracted - confused effect - to cause something to happen Important note: Please practice addition and subtraction facts with your child each day. You will need one set each of addition and subtraction cards. Pick 12 facts to work on at a time. When your child has mastered these, choose 12 more. Just practice for about 12-15 minutes at a time. Have your child say the whole problem, such as 4+3=7, not just say the answer. It is just a matter of memorizing them. If your child doesn't answer within 2 seconds say the answer and have him say the fact 5 times. Then continue with the next fact.
