Janurary 19, 2010 In Health Class we are wrapping up a mini-unit on "Human Body Systems" which tied in nicely to our field trip to the exhibit "Body Worlds 2" at the Philadelphia Franklin Institute on January 14. Classes will go into more detail about the musculo-skeletal system and muscle strength and endurance training over the next week or so. We will be putting theory into practice buy utilizing the weight room. By the end of the unit students will know the different types of muscle tissue, which are voluntary and involuntary, connective tissue, all of the major muscle groups and which exercises can be performed to keep their bodies healthy. They will make connections between the benefits of strength training and their own personal growth as they track their progress. Students have completed three rounds of Physical Best Fitness Assessments. This involves the one-mile run, curl-ups, push ups, sit-n-reach, trunk lift, BMI and body fat measurements. Students are encouraged to be self-directed by recording their own scores, comparing those against national health fitness zone standards and setting personal goals in the various areas of fitness. Classes are finishing a unit on floor hockey and will begin sessions in the weight room on January 25, 2010. PLEASE REMIND YOUR STUDENT(S) TO BRING A CHANGE OF CLOTHES TO EVERY PE CLASS. A LOCK TO USE IN THE LOCKER ROOM IS ALSO RECOMMENDED. If you would like to be notified when this webpage is updated, just click on the "notify me" button and you will receive an update. |
