NORTH ROWAN MIDDLE SCHOOL

OUR SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT

North Rowan Middle School values mutual respect and individual improvement among students, staff, and community.  We promote high expectations one child at a time in a nurturing, welcoming, and safe learning environment.

OUR GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT

Our guidance department is designed to support, encourage and promote the academic, career, personal/social growth and development of all students.  Through the guidance curriculum by the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, various needs of our students will be addressed.  As school counselors, we work with parents, students, teachers, and community agencies to help ensure that students learn and develop to their highest potentials.

Welcome to my webpage!  Hard to believe that the school year is quickly passing by.

Hello, my name is Mrs. MaiKo Yang, and I am one of the school counselors at North Rowan Middle School.  This is my fifth year here, and I have enjoyed meeting with parents/guardians, working with your children, and networking with community agencies.

Rowan Early College Applications-8th Grade Students Only

Applications are available in guidance through me, and they are due on Friday, January 15, 2010.

For more information about Early College, please click on the website below.

Peer Mediation Program

NRMS has a peer mediation that has been in existence since I have been here.  Mr. Austin is in charge of our peer mediation program. Each teachers recommends 14-16 students in grades 7th and 8th grade who display leadership skills and positivie attitudes.  These students go through a rigorious two-day training at the beginning of each school year with Mr. Austin.  After the training, these students are ready to take on the challenges of their peers.

Through the NC Standard Course of Study, the following services are provided through the school counselors:

Individual Counseling

During the school days, any student who wishes to speak to the counselors can do so, with the teacher's permission to leave class.  Referrals can be made by a student him/herself, teachers, parents/guardians, and/or administrators.

At the beginning of each school year, the counselors go into the classroom and conduct a needs assessment survey.  Each student is given a survey to complete.  After that, each survey is tally up to see which topics are the most critical for group counseling and classroom guidance.

Group Counseling

Group counseling consists of 6-8 students per group (one per grade level).  Students meet once a week during a non-academic class (45 minutes) for 9 consecutive weeks.

Once a student goes through a particular group, he/she will not be able to go through the same group again because it uses the same curriculum.

We will facilitate the following groups this year:

Groups for Fall 2009

*Skills for Success

*Getting Along With Others

Groups for Spring 2010

*Take Control of Your Anger

*All About Me (Self-Esteem)

Classroom Guidance

Every year both counselors go into all the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classrooms and conduct a lesson with the students.

Topics for this year are:

Fall 2009      *Setting Goals

Spring 2010  *Careers

State Tests

Due to state budget cuts, the only test that all students will take this year is the End-of-Grade (EOGs), which will be in May.

Parents/guardians:  just a reminder that during the testing season, please do not schedule any appointments or pick up your child early from school.  It is important that your child gets plenty of rest the night before, eats breakfast, and come to school on time.

Volunteers Needed/Wanted

The guidance department is looking for any adults who have a few hours to spare, especially during the testing season.  If you want to volunteer, please call Ms. Huffman at 704-639-3018.

If you have any questions, please email me or call me directly.  If you need to meet with me after 3:30, then please call to make arrangements with me.

Thank you for visiting my webpage, and have a wonderful day :)
