Homework     January 26-30       Be safe and warm!!

*******Have parents/guardians sign any essay rubrics or tests for +2. If you haven’t gotten your scores, you can email me or wait until we have class. When you receive your grades, you have a week to get the signatures.

Due Friday – One to two (or more) paragraphs describing how your family came to be in America, in as much detail as you are able to obtain. Thank the family member who is taking the time to share with you. Information may include:

  • The name(s) of the person immigrating ( no one was born with the name “Grandma” or “My Dad”)
  • The dates and places of the immigration route – this may be directly from one country to US, or may involve travel through multiple countries.
  • Push Factors – why was the old country left?
  • Pull Factors – why was America chosen?
  • Conditions/experiences of the journey
  • Best/Worst experiences of old country
  • Best/Worst experiences in United States
  • Was this intended to be a permanent move?
  • Has/Did the immigrant ever return to the old country?
  • Getting to Great Neck - how did your family get from wherever they landed in USA to Great Neck?
  • If you are not the person who immigrated, have you ever traveled to the country your family is from? If you haven’t, would you want to in the future?
  • You may want to use these as prompts in your conversation about immigration.. Remember that these may be sensitive topics and you are asking people about life changing events. Be patient and respectful and say, “Thank you” often.
  • If family information is hard to find, supplement the facts you have, with general information found online. For example, I have no personal information about my grandfather’s birthplace, voyage or first job, but I did look up Italian immigrants, 1890s, NY railroads and found him and two of his friends in two different books in my college library. That’s what I found without the Internet! I have also found many other journals of men from Sicily describing the situation in Italy and Ellis Island. That information would help me create a paragraph.

Extra credit – print a map (free at eduplace and several other sites) and label the country and continent of origin; the route (may include oceans, other continents, other countries) and the city/state/United States.
