Mrs. Parker's Page 4th Grade Doors will open at 8:10, and the tardy bell will ring at 8:30. School will dismiss at 3:00. Classroom Wish List Candy for our Treasure Box Zip Lock Bags Dry Erase Markers Brain Games - Uno, Clue, Battleship, Taboo Jr., Apples to Apples Jr., Sequence, any educational games from a teacher store (Just the Thing is in downtown Salisbury), Traffic Hour, Bop It, UNO attack, Simon - More to come - What we are doing: Week of February 8 Language Arts Reading - The Last Dragon VOCABULARY : 1. characters - symbols or letters used in printing or writing. 2. crest - something, such as feathers, that grows on an animal's head. 3. fierce - wild and mean, dangerous. 4. homage - special public honor. 5. scales - small, thin, flat parts that cover a fish or reptile. 6. snaked - moved in a winding and twisting way. 7. teeming - full, crowded Spelling Rule - final /j/ /s/ sounds Please practice these rules at home. While the spelling test will consist of most of the words from your child's take home list, there may be one or two words on the test that are not from "the list". These words will follow the spelling rule we have learned this week in class. 1) one syllable word, short vowel sound : final /j/ sound is spelled -dge bridge, ridge, edge, lodge, dodge 2) one syllable word, long vowel sound : final /j/ sounds is spelled -ge strange, cage, change 3) two syllable word : final /j/ sound is spelled -age village, cottage, carriage, manage, damage, marriage, cabbage 4) final /s/ sound is spelled -ce fence, chance, twice, glance, since Writing Writing Assignment # 2 Choose one of the three North Carolina regions (Coastal, Piedmont, or Mountains). Write an essay to convince tourists to visit your region. Be sure to include at least three persuasive reasons. Your report should not be longer than 2 pages. Please use the paper provided (in class) for your final product. UNRAAVEL - This is another strategy from Larry Bell. Students are expected to be able to spell UNRAAVEL as well as write down what each letter stands for. We will be practicing how to use this strategy in class to learn how to UNRAAVEL reading passages. When students apply this strategy they are more likely to be more successful at finding the correct answer on tests in class, as well as standardized tests such as the EOG's. U - Underline the passage N - Now predict the passage R - Run through and number paragraphs A - Are you reading the questions A - Are the important words circled? (Write down their meaning.) V - Venture (read) through the passage E - Eliminate the obviously wrong answers. L - Let the questions be answered and write the paragraph # where you found the answers next to the question. 12 Powerful Words(Larry Bell) - This is a powerful test taking strategy. These words prepare students to do better on tests by explaining to them in terms they can understand what the different types of questions mean. Please ask your child about these words and have them act them out for you as well. 1. Trace - Outline, list in steps, or follow the path 2. Analyze - Break it into parts, tell about the parts 3. Infer - Read between the lines, what is the hidden meaning 4. Evaluate - Judge it, tell the good and the bad 5. Formulate - Create, put together 6. Describe - Tell about, paint a picture with words 7. Support - Back it up or prove it with details 8. Explain - Teach me or show me, tell me the steps 9. Summarize - Tell the main idea, tell the beginning, middle, and end 10. Compare - Tell all the ways they are the same 11. Contrast - Tell all the ways they are different 12. Predict - What will happen next? Math Median, Mode, Range THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE for median, mode, and range is to alway start by putting numbers in order from least to greatest. Once numbers are in order, then complete the following steps: ~Median : the number in the middle (if 2 numbers are in the middle, first add the numbers.
