Kite Projects are due

Book Reports are past dueAll students in Mr. McArdles class should have read and prepared a book talk

Academy of Reading

Monday – Friday

Students will go on Academy of Reading daily.  They will be taken off and worked with on different goals/objectives.  Not everyone is stuck in the same areas so focus is very individualized for student success.  Parents can work on vowel sounds and made up words to see if your student can tell you what it is.  Have your student write on the side of their paper the drawings for the vowels to help them.  If you have noticed issues with PDB reversals, have the student practice writing words with those in them.  I have been giving them stickies and having them imagine a bed.  Look at the word bed.  Sound it out.  B is the first letter and it is pointed to the right and D is pointed to the left.  It looks like a bed. They are all progressing rapidly through the program.  We will have testing very soon to see how they have developed.  As always, have them read 20 minutes or equivalent daily.  ( My personal children read 40 minutes during the week because of homework and activities, but read 2 hours over the week end)  The important thing is keeping them reading.

Ca- focus is still on organization and studying.

Please have students study their words daily and complete homework for success in the class. Reading Academy students should be reading the equivalent to twenty minutes a day at home and practice short vowel sounds. Each should have a book readily available and should be reading with it.  In order for them to improve reading, they must read.  They are on the computer for at least thirty minutes training their brains on how to think like a good reader.  You can help by taking them to the library and picking out books together,  They can take them out here or ask to borrow any of mine.  All of our students are making great progress and putting in great effort at school . Sometimes they get frustrated and discouraged but please help them stay focused and positive.  I always look on the bright side and they are all trying really hard right now.  So, tell them “ good job in reading.”  We are still working on spelling but I see some improvements since the beginning of the year.  Again, we are training their brains.  If I can assist you in anyway, let me know.    We attempted to read On my Honor this week but I decided they still need a little practice in sounds and vocabulary before we start.  If everyone is here on Monday, I will start on it again.

In Ca, see below.  We work on what they need daily.

Academy of Reading:  Justin B is the big winner this week with over 8 trophies!!!  Go Justin.  The rest of the class have won 3 and up.  I am so proud of them and their progress.  They have come to work on it during CA's and during homeroom to get ahead.  A lot of learning is taking place and they are truly enjoying the computer.  I have had to work with a few with rhyming, and ending sounds in words.  Please say words while you are in the car and ask your cgild to either ryhme with you or start a word with the sound of the word that you say. ( Make learning fun!!)  Also, focus on short vowels and consonants.  I will work on the blends and diagraphs in my class.

Each day will will still have a sound check for spelling words and I will try to fit in a couple days of SRA while still completing the reading on the computer.  However, we need to have a certain number of minutes logged in each week per student or we will lose the program.  Our school was chosen as a pilot program and if you like what you see, please write or email Mr. Pittman a big thank you because without him, we wouldn't have this opportunity.

CA- Each day we will have essential questions in every core subject.  We will focus on math review, science,LA and social studies this week.  There is no spelling test this week so we will not go over the words for next time but I think I will have them make a study guide for next weeks test for extra credit. We will go over SS questions and Spiral math reviews for reinforcement.  We will also complete drills in multiplication because many are having difficulty on the math problems because of lack of basic skill knowledge.  Try some rfeview at home and see where your student is.

Week of October 13

Review words this week.

This week we will review the words from the past 8 weeks and concentrate on the sounds and words that we missed.  I am also very excited to announce a great program that we will be doing at Holly Ridge that we hope to be up and running on Monday.  The program is called Reading Academy.  It is a computer based program that teaches students at their level unitl they reach automaticity.  It compliments the SRA program and students will still be given spelling words each week as well as their morning warm ups.  I will work with groups in SRA while some are on the computer and then change groups so each child has more attention from me and Ms. Rountree.

All of my students seem to be making progress that is all possible from the support that you give them at home.  Homework has been pretty regular (aside from this week) and each student has made growth based on pretest results.  I am proud of each and everyone of them and it is great that they are so motivated to learn.
