Welcome to Mr. Dexter's

Upcoming Events:

Football, softball, and tennis, seasons continue their seasons as we are nearly 5 weeks into the school year!  Progress reports will be going home the week of the 28th.  Please look for these and sign and return them when your child brings them home.

Math News-

We just finished up chapter 1 which dealt with exponents, rounding, comparing and ordering numbers, and order of operations.  We'll be talking about  integers briefly since it goes along with comparing and ordering.  By the end of the week, we'll start algebra.  This will be a difficult concept for many students so we will spend a few weeks with this.  Also, the concept will continue throughout the year as we study decimals and fractions later so it's important to have a good understanding before moving on.

Science News-

We'll begin the year studying what science is and doing some investigations using the scientific method.  Test on the scientific method and the vocabulary associated with that chapter will be Friday this week. (September 25th)

Parents:

Please remind your child that, even as we finish a concept, they should not forget it. As I continue to tell the students, math is a process and everything we do will somehow connect with something we already did. Reviewing notes during homework time would be a great tool to remember what was done in class!

Other information to be aware of:

**Many students in 6th grade still do not know their multiplication facts!! Please spend some time each night (at least 10 minutes) helping them practice. Everything we do this year stems in some way from multiplication and if they are struggling with their facts, they will fall behind. Also, again, please make sure your child is reviewing notes taken each day. The more time they study their notes, the less they will have to cram before a test!!

Please feel free to contact me at school anytime you have a question or a concern! I am here to help and look forward to doing so in any way I can! The student planner is also a great way to communicate. Please check this every day for any notes that our team might have written in there. This is where students are supposed to write their homework down as well.

I will be tutoring students starting in the second quarter of the school year. Just something to think about just in case some of you are wondering. More information will come in early November.

Another note: In middle school, we have a telephone system called homework hotline. Students and parents can call this to check homework assignments if absences occur, an assignment was not written down, etc. The telephone number to the hotline is in the front of your child's student planner.
Thanks in advance for your support!!

I will be working on this page on at least a monthly basis. Please keep checking for new stuff! Thanks!! --Mr. Dexter
