WELCOME TO MRS. FRAPWELL'S SCHOOL NOTES PAGE!!

This is the place where students and parents can
find all the latest events happening in 7th grade
Math and 8th grade Pre-Algebra. I will update this
page every Monday to give everyone an idea of the
plans for the week. REMEMBER THAT NOTHING IS
WRITTEN IN STONE!! Special events may occur
to alter these plans or things may slow down
slightly if the students are struggling to master
a particular concept. Always check your students'
homework planner for the most current assignment
responsibilities.

Lesson Plans for the week of February 6th thru February 10th, 2012

DOODLE 4 GOOGLE

The Doodle4Google event for 2012 has begun.  Our SJNRCS artists have been very successful in the contest in the past.  In fact, we have had two State of Georgia winners in the four (4) years we have participated.

This year the winner will be awarded a $30,000 college scholarship, a trip to New York for an event on May 17, 2012, a Google Chromebook computer, a Wacom digital design tablet and a t-shirt printed with his or her doodle on it.  The winning logo will also be featured on the Crayola 64 box and the Google site.  The winner's school will receive a $50,000 technology grant towards the improvement of the technology program.

students are welcome to attend. Please be sure
to bring your questions and concerns.

Monday -

go over the textbook pages completed last week (pages 189 and page 742-743) involving reducing fractions, using cross products and converting units of measure with the same system (both customrary and metric)

Lesson #4:1 - ratios and rates

textbook pages 190-193 - go trhough the steps of Examples #1 and #2 to show students how to set up a ratio in fraction form and reduce it (make sure the units of measure match nad ALWAYS RETAIN TWO NUMBERS COMPARED BY DIVISION!!).  Do problems #1-4 and #15-18 on textbook page 192 for practice.  use Examples #3 and #4 to show the difference between a ratio and a rate and also how to create a unit rate.  do problems #5-6 and #18-21 for practice.  CALCULATORS MAY NOT be used on these problems!!

Homework - copies of workbook page 11 will be distributed to the students and tonight they are responsible for completing ALL of the problems!!  (CALCULATORS MAY NOT be used on this assignment!!)

Tuesday -

return and review the Computation Countdown Quiz that was completed last week (Subtraction of Fractions with the Same Denominators) AND  then go over the homework from Monday and collect

Lesson #4:2 - proportional and non-proportional relationships

textbook pages 194-197 - have students complete the table at the top of textbook page 194 to show an example of a proportional relationship.  Use Example #1 on the same page to show the existence of a non-proportional relationship.  Do problems #1-8 on textbook pages 195-196 for practice.  Be sure that students use ratios to explain their answer (have them make a table showing at least FOUR (4) values for each quantity!!)  CALCULATORS MAY NOT be used on these problems!!

Homework - copies of workbook page 18 will be distributed to the students and tonight they are responsible for completing ALL of the problems!!  (CALCULATORS MAY NOT be used on this assignment!!)

Wednesday - 9:00 A.M. Mass with Bishop Zarama - BOYS, PLEASE REMEMBER TO WEAR YOUR TIES!!

go over the homework from Tuesday night and collect

Students will be given the opportunity to review the concepts presented in Lessons #4:1 and #4:2 (ratios, rates, unit rates, proportional relationships and non-proportional relationships) by using the ON-LINE "Self-Check Quizzes" from these same lessons as class practice.  Students will also be given an opportunity for independent review of these same topics by completing problems #7-12 on textbook page 243 individually.  Only after all of these review problems have been completed will the students be asked to begin working on the quiz.  CALCULATORS MAY NOT be used on this quiz!!  Additional class time will be provided on Thursday to complete this quiz, if necessary!!

QUIZ A for CHAPTER 4

Homework - finish any review problems begun during class today in prepartion for Quiz A for Chapter 4!!  (CALCULATORS MAY NOT be used during this review or on the quiz!!)

Thursday -

provide additional class time to complete Quiz A for Chapter 4, if necessary, OR return and review the results of this quiz together

Lesson #4:3 - rate of change

textbook pages 198-203 - write the definition of a rate of change on the board (see textbook page 198).  Use Examples #1 and #2 to illustrate a positive and a negative rate of change.  Do problems #10-11 and #13-14 to practice calculating rates of change from a graph and a table.  Review the "Concept Summary" graphs and Example #3 to compare rates of change by judging the "steepness" of the line graph.  Do problems #12 and #15-17 first and then create the graph for #6.  CALCULATORS MAY NOT be used on these problems!!

Homework - copies of workbook page 24 will be distributed to the students and tonight they are responsible for completing ALL of the problems!!  (CALCULATORS MAY NOT BE USED on this assignment!!)

Friday - 7th and 8th GRADE DANCE TONIGHT - 7:00-9:00 P.M. in the CAFETERIA

go over the homework from Thursday and collect

Lesson #4:4 - constant rate of change

textbook pages 204-209 - read through the information on textbook page 204 together to define linear relationships and constant rate of change.  Go through the steps of Example #1 (both parts "a" and "b") to be sure that students can distinguish between linear and non-linear relationships.  Do problems #1-2 and #7-10 for practice.  Example #2 shows how to find a constant rate of change given the graph of a linear relationship.  Do problems #3-4 and #11-16 to practice interpreting the meaning of this rate.  CALCULATORS MAY NOT be used on these problems!!

Homework - copies of workbook page 30 will be distributed to the students and tonight they are responsible for completing ALL of the problems!! (CALCULATORS MAY NOT be used on this assignment!!)

8th Grade Pre-Algebra

ATTENTION ALL PRE-ALGEBRA STUDENTS AND PARENTS:
EXTRA HELP sessions offered every THURSDAY morning
at 7:25 a.m. Any and all 8th grade Pre-Algebra
students are welcome to attend. Please be sure
to bring your questions and concerns.

Monday -

go over the three-dimensional paper models that were created last week using "nets" of prisms and pyramids AND return the Vocabulary Quiz for Chapter 10

Lesson #11:3 - volume of pyramids and cones

textbook pages 589-594 - use the "Concepts In Motion" ON-LINE resource to show students that a pyramid has 1/3 the volume of a prism with the same base area and height.  Go through the steps of Example #1 to practice this concept and then assign problems #1, #5, #9-10, #12 and #18.  Then have students identify the base of each solid in problems #3 and #11 and use the given base area to calculate the volume of these new pyramids.  (Do problem #19 also.)  Demonstrate - using a supply of water and a clear plastic model of a cone and cylinder - that the volumes of these two shapes are related in the same manner (it takes three "cones" to fill the cylinder).  Go through the steps of Example #2 to practice using this formula and then assign problems #2, #6, #13-14 and #20-21 on textbook page 592 for practice.  CALCULATORS MAY BE USED on these problems!!

Homework - copies of workbook page 21 will be distributed to the students and tonight they are responsible for completing problems #1-2, #4, #6 and #7 ONLY!!  (CALCULATORS MAY BE USED on this assignment!!)

Tuesday -

go over the homework from Monday

Lesson #11:3 - volume of a sphere

textbook pages 589-594 - read through the information at the bottom of textbook page 590 to help students understand the derivation of the volume formula for a sphere.  Go through the steps of Example #3 on textbook page 591 to practice using this formula and then assign problems #4, #7, #15-17 and #22-23 on textbook page 592.  Use problems #33 and #34 on textbook page 593 to give students practice using these volume formulas to find missing dimension of a given solid.  CALCULATORS MAY BE USED on these exercises!!

Homework - students will continue to use the copy of workbook page 21 that was distributed on Monday and tonight they are responsible for completing problems #3, #5 and #8-10 ONLY!!  (CALCULATORS MAY BE USED on this assignment!!)

Wednesday -  9:00 A.M. Mass with Bishop Zarama - BOYS, PLEASE REMEMBER TO WEAR YOUR TIES!!

go over the homework from Tuesday and collect

Students will be given an opportunity to review the concepts presented in Lessons #11:1 thru #11:3 (naming three dimensional solids, finding volume of prisms, cylinders, pyramids, cones and spheres) in preparation for a Mid-Chapter 11 Test.  Problems #1-16 on textbook page 595 (Mid-Chapter Practice Quiz) will be completed during class today - skipping problems #5 and #6.  Only upon completion of all of these review problems will the students be asked to begin working on the exam during class on Thursday.  CALCULATORS MAY BE USED on this test!!

Homework - finish any review problems begun during class today in preparation for the Mid-Chapter 11 Test on Thursday (covers only Lessons #11:1 thru #11:3).  CALCULATORS MAY BE USED during this review and on the test!!

Thursday -

go over any last minute review questions the students may have regarding the topics presented in Lessons #11:1 thru #11:3 and then distribute copies of the exam.  CALCULATORS MAY BE USED on this test!!

MID-CHAPTER 11 TEST

If any class time remains after all students have completed all of the test questions, introduce the concept of "SURFACE AREA" by reviewing the steps the students followed to create the three-dimensional paper models of prisms from a "net".  EMPHASIZE the various "surfaces" required to create the box (lateral area and area of the bases)

Homework - NONE
