Welcome to Mr. Miller's 8th Grade Science Classes!! Wrestling practice for the 2009 season will start on Tuesday, November 3rd from 3:30-6:00 p.m. Students must have a current physical on file before they may begin practice. Our team name for 2009/2010 is the Bodie Island Team, after the lighthouse of the same name on the Outer Banks of N.C. Please encourage your child to take the practice E. O. G. test at nc8.msscience.com prior to the 2010 Science E.O.G. Test. Team teachers (Mr. Miller-Science; Mrs. Alex-Language Arts; Mr. File-Math; Mrs. Byrd-Social Studies; or Mrs. Wellmon-Resource), can be contacted during our planning period (5th-6th periods) at Erwin's # (704-279-7265). Please talk to your student daily about their schoolwork. Parental involvement is one of the leading indicators of student achievement and success in school. ERWIN SPORTS!! This year I will again serve as head coach in the sports of football and wrestling. In Erwin Athletics, we try to get students to understand that life is more than just winning and losing, and that many valuable lessons can be learned in addition to the rules of the game. These lessons include such character traits as courage, perseverance, leadership, positive attitude, good sportsmanship and HARD WORK. These lessons carried over to the last four boy's track seasons (thrice undefeated conference CHAMPIONS!!) and the five most recent wrestling seasons, where we went 40-18 (finishing second, first, and second in the varsity conference tournaments, and winning the regular season in 06/07 and runner-up in 07/08). A total of 70 boys finished in the top 3 places in the ten wrestling tournaments. The 2006/2007 Mighty Eagles Wrestling Team had a fantastic season. Erwin won 13 matches in a row over a two year period, and 29 straight matches against Rowan County opponents over a four year period, finishing 11-1, tying the school record for most victories. We had team first place finishes during the regular season, the conference tournament and the J.V. Invitational tournament. These were the first conference championships for Erwin in wrestling since 1993. Erwin finished the 2007/2008 season in a grand fashion, narrowly losing twice to undefeated West Rowan. Our final record was 10-2, tying the second best record in school history. We finished second in the conference tournament, missing winning by only 8 points. We won 42 out of the last 45 matches against county opponents, prior to 2008/09. Our last victory over Southeast was my 113th middle school victory as a wrestling coach. Last school year (2008/2009), Erwin won conference championships in girl's softball-regular season and tournament, girl's tennis-undefeated, girl's 7th grade basketball-regular season , and boy's tennis. You can understand why I enjoy coaching so much at Erwin!! Our wrestling records have been: 2004/05 - 8 wins- 2 losses 2005/06 -10 - 2 2006/07 -11 - 1 2007/08 -10 - 2 2008/09- 1 -11 Total----40 wins and 18 losses in five seasons!! As you can see, last year's team record was a disappointment compared to the success we've enjoyed over the past four years. However, the coaches felt that we did as well as we could considering that we forfeited an average of six weight classes in every match throughout the season. We suffered from poor turnout this season, with only 21 trying out for the team. We also suffered from SIX broken hands, arms, or fingers which reduced our numbers even further. Nine of the fourteen wrestlers that finished the season placed in the top four places in their weight classes at the conference tournament (1-first, 3-seconds, 3-thirds, and 2-fourths). Our individual record total for the season was 100 wins and 91 losses. This year's athletes are some of the finest that I have worked with in my thirty+ years of coaching. For our teams to get stronger, we've started the 10,000 Push-up Club (100 per day for 100 days). Over 65 athletes have completed 10,000 so far!! Every athlete that is expecting to play for the Eagles this year needs to get busy!! Thanks to all of the players, fans and supporters of our Eagles sports program. Finally, MANY THANKS go out to all of the students, parents, administrators and staff who continue to welcome me into the Erwin Eagle Family (thanks especially for the many Christmas presents, get well cards for my recent surgeries, and 55th Birthday cards-4/18/09). I truly appreciate your effort to again make our school a SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE!!! ***Linked sites are not under the control of the school district, its agents or its employees.
