  ERWIN SPORTS!!

In Erwin Athletics, we try to get students to understand that life is more than just winning and losing, and that many valuable lessons can be learned in addition to the rules of the game. These lessons include such character traits as courage, perseverance, leadership, positive attitude, good sportsmanship and HARD WORK. These lessons carried over to the last six boy's track seasons (five times undefeated Conference CHAMPIONS!!).

I have announced my retirement from coaching, at the end of the 2009/2010 school year. I had coached in the Rowan-Salisbury School System since December 5, 1977. Overall, my football teams total records were 134 wins-90 losses-1 tie in thirty-one seasons. In twenty-one seasons, my wrestling teams were 114 wins-67 losses.

" Coach Miller taught science and math and coached at Knox Middle School until May of 2003. At Knox, he coached football, wrestling, baseball and girl’s volleyball. In addition, he served as athletic director, Bi-County M. S. Conference President, track meet director, North Piedmont M. S. Conference Board of Directors member and three times was named Knox Teacher of the Year, in addition to being named to Who's Who Among Teachers In American Schools (five times). His football team’s record was 87 wins, 47 losses and 1 tie, including three undefeated conference champions, two runners-up and a 21 game win streak. His wrestling team’s record was 64 wins and 38 losses, including one undefeated regular season championship, one tournament championship, three runners-up and a 20 match win streak.

As a science teacher and coach at Erwin M. S. since August, 2003, his football teams have had a record of 47 wins and 43 losses, including one conference runner-up. His wrestling team’s record was 50 wins and 29 losses, including one regular season championship, one tournament championship, three runners-up and a 29 match win streak against Rowan County opponents.

So far, fifty-one athletes on Coach Miller’s teams have gone on to play college sports.

Miller will continue to teach science at Erwin. In retirement, he looks forward to free afternoons, fishing, hunting and traveling with his wife and three sons."

2009/2010 was my last year as a coach, finishing  thirty-four years of enjoyment. I will continue as a science teacher for the near future.

Thanks to all of the players, fans and supporters of our Eagles sports program.

Finally, MANY THANKS go out to all of the students, parents, administrators and staff who continue to welcome me into the Erwin Eagle Family (thanks especially for the many Christmas presents, and 57th Birthday cards-4/18/11). I truly appreciate your effort to again make our school a SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE!!!
