The Bodie Islander Teachers
The end of the first marking period is almost here. Students have been working hard on DOL (Daily Oral Language) and Word Skills almost daily. In class, we have studied Subject/Verb Agreement and taken a test on the computer to practice skills learned in the computer lab working with Pages, a program that will be used for creating brochures, writing research papers, and many other lessons. We are currently learning about the differences between tone and mood. Since the beach trip will be the week of Oct. 26-28, we will discuss what we already know about Harriet Tubman, and hopefully will find new information about the Underground Railroad. SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) has been going well. Students are encouraged to read a book or magazine suited to their individual interests and share what they have read each Friday. Even the most reluctant readers are participating. The WordSkills program will be taught again this year to help students continue to develop better vocabulary skills. They are able to apply the prefixes learned so far to words they find in other areas. We will also continue working on new prefixes and base words. By knowing the definitions of different parts of words, they are able to break down unfamiliar words into their parts and attempt an educated guess about their meaning. Sometimes they surprise themselves at what they are learning. Language Arts In Language Arts we focus on Parts of Speech and writing a research paper. Several times throughout the year, students will use the computer lab in the library. It is our goal for students to continuously work on improving their reading skills. Later this year we may work with SRA, a reading program designed to have students working individually at their own rate. This program helps them to increase not only the speed at which they read, but also helps them to understand more of what they read. Because students are not allowed to take any part of the laboratory home, all work will be completed in class. Each student is to bring a library book to class each day. If they finish their lesson early, they will be practicing the day's skills by reading a book of their choice. This year our planning time is 1:32. - 3:20P.M. If you need to contact us, please feel free to call. We would love to hear from you. We encourage parents and students to call the Homework Hotline nightly. The number is (704)279-0790. The Bodie Islander extension is 8001. This will only give you homework assignments, not the classroom assignment for the day.
