                February 6 - 10, 2012

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
LUKE SCHWEIGER is our TOP CAT this week, and we will celebrate his FEBRUARY 5th BIRTHDAY today, 2/6/12!! :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

*Just in case you were wondering, your children will be decorating Valentine Boxes at school this week.  You do NOT need to send anything in!!!  I want to thank Mrs. Cox for doing the footwork and purchasing the boxes and decorations!

*We will be having a Valentine Party next Tuesday, and the children may pass out Valentines. (There are 26 students in our class.)  I have two  requests to make.  1.) There will be a treat served during the party.  There is no need for parents to send in candy to pass out to the kids. Please just have your child bring in Valentine cards. 2.) Please do NOT have your child write names on the outside of the Valentines.  If they can be passed out randomly, it takes considerably less time.  Thank you for your cooperation.

MATH: CHAPTER 5: Subtraction of 2-digit Numbers
            CHAPTER 11: Measurement ("Friday Fun Math!")

 Adding 2-digit numbers with regrouping went very well!  The children were quick to catch on.

This chapter will probably be more challenging.  Subtracting 2-digit numbers with regrouping (We called it "borrowing" in my day.) requires the students to remember to: 1.) Subtract the bottom number from the top number, 2.) Subtract the numbers in the Ones Column first, and then the Tens Column, 3.) Show their work (more to do, more to show, more to remember than regrouping in Addition!), and 4.) Subtract, NOT ADD!

There are FIVE lessons in the math book before we actually get to the nitty gritty subtracting with regrouping, so don't expect your child to know how to do it until next week! After that, the more you want to have them practice subtracting, the better!

Even more importantly, PLEASE CONTINUE TO HAVE YOUR CHILD STUDY & MEMORIZE SIMPLE 1-DIGIT ADDITION FACTS AND CONVERT THEM INTO SUBTRACTION FACTS!!!  (For example, once your child has memorized that 5+2=7, have him/her memorize that 7-5=2 and 7-2=5.  Get him/her to "make the connection" between addition math facts and subtraction!!!)

   (60 Seconds) TIMED ADDITION (16 [1-digit] math facts)
                           QUIZ THIS WEEK!
