October 26 - 30

We have enough red tulip bulbs and will be planting on Wednesday at 9:15.  If you would like to help us plant, please send a note and I will let Mrs. Eirring, our guidance counselor, know that you can help.  She needed some more help for third grade.

WEAR RED TOMORROW FOR RED RIBBON WEEK--SAY NO TO DRUGS!

Our trip to the Virginia Living Museum is this Friday!  Please remember to wear comfortable clothes and shoes and jackets if needed.  If you have a very small bottle of hand sanitizer that your child can keep in his/her pocket, that might be helpful since there are a lot of "hands-on" exhibits at the museum.  We will be eating lunch outside at the picnic tables if the weather permits. The students will receive a "goodie bag" and we will not visit the gift shop.  If you are planning to follow the bus and walk with your child's group, write a note in your child's agenda just to remind me.

We will continue to work on comparing and contrasting characters and settings as well as summarizing, comprehension, and context clues in reading.  The students are reading leveled books in their reading groups.  Remember that there are about 10 days left in the 9 weeks for the AR goal to be met. Keep reading!!

For spelling this week the students will have words with the oo sound as in book and the short u sound.  Based on the pretest, the students will have a list of words which are from the spelling workbook or words that are a bit harder.  Everyone will have: texture, physical, chemical, change, and atoms. The words are available on www.spellingcity.com and the students will be able to play games with their spelling words.  They may print one and use it for one night's activity.

In writing we will be writing an explanation of an erupting volcano experiment that we did on Friday. Students will use sequence words to give their explanation.

In math we will continue with subtraction up to 4 digits with regrouping. We will also be subtracting across zeros which is very difficult. With the subtraction, we will emphasize that when you regroup, you need to mark out two numbers at a time.  We are using two different colored pencils to keep this straight.  For instance, use the red to mark out two numbers and then if you have to regroup again within the same problem, use another color and mark out two numbers before you change them. I will be taking grades in this skill this week.  We just practiced last week. In math we will also begin to go over equivalent times which is: 7 days in a week, 12 months in a year, 365 days in a year, 24 hours in a day, 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour.

In Science we will continue our study of matter this week.  Students will need to know the three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas, properties of matter, physical changes, chemical changes, volume, density, and mass.  This is found in Chapter 11 of the Science textbook. We will not have the test this week.
