 October 20-24

Reminders: *** Last day of Quarter 1 is October 30th *** October reading logs are due October 30th -no exceptions since this is last day of quarter ***

Reading/Writing: We will continue to read and use our evaluate strategy as we read our newest selection titled The Keeping Quilt. Our spelling words have long vowel sounds and the words can be found at the bottom of this newsletter. The spelling test will be on Friday, as will our selection test.  Be sure to study your words and do the assigned spelling homework.  We will also be working on identifying the author's viewpoint and paraphrasing.  In writing, we will use the writing process to write a paragraph that compares and contrasts.  We will also correctly use commas in a series and work on compound words.    

Math:  In math, we will work on solving addition and subtraction word problems by drawing pictures, solve subtraction problems using a variety of strategies, and adding and subtracting amounts of money. There will be a quiz on Friday which will cover the concepts taught this week.

Science:  In science, continue to work in chapter 4.  We will discover how living things compete and learn how environments change. We will also discover what sort of environment is healthy for people.  We will have a chapter 4 test on Tuesday 10/ 27 and a study guide will go home on Monday 10/26.  Please be aware that the science tests are not out of 100 points.  They vary depending on the chapter however, they all include 2 two point short answer questions and 1 four point written response.  Therefore, the total amount of points won't be out of 100. Each multiple choice (SR) question is worth 1 point.  

Social Studies:  We will begin a new Unit this week.  This week we will identify the regions of the US and explain similarities and differences within their environments.  We will also discuss how people adapt to different climates.  

Health: We will begin discussing and understanding feelings.          

Art: We will create "feeling pumpkins" as an art project this week.

Spelling Words: The Keeping Quilt- test on 10/24- List 1: paint, clay, feet, leave, neighbor, eight, seem, speak, paid, lay, need, weigh, needle, crayon. List 2:paint, clay, feet, leave, neighbor, eight, seem, speak, paid, lay, need, weigh, needle, crayon, remain, trailer, brief, repeat, piece, station.

Homework: ** all spelling homework should be done on loose leaf paper so that it can be collected**

Monday:  Reading: Read for at least 20 minutes and record on reading log, Writing:  Define any 5 spelling words. Art: Be prepared for tomorrow's activity by making sure you have glue, scissors, and  crayons

Tuesday:  Reading: Read for at least 20 minutes and record on reading log, Writing: Define 5 more spelling words. Social Studies: Lesson 14 BCR worksheet

Wednesday:  Reading: Read for at least 20 minutes and record on reading log, Writing: Use 10 spelling words in sentences (1 word in each sentence) OR put all 10 words in a paragraph. Be sure to underline your spelling words. Math: Worksheet PS 3-9/3-10 (front and back)    

Thursday:  Reading: Read for at least 20 minutes, Writing: Study your spelling words.  Science: workbook page 40A.  

Friday: Reading: Read for at least 20 minutes and record on reading log. Math: Finishline page 77 # 4-6, page 79 # 9
