We use reading every day:

From traffic signs to recipes to e-mails, reading is a skill that's important to many everyday activities.  We also use this skill to learn about what's going on in the world today.  Reading is vital to communicate and staying informed and connected to the world around us.

You can teach reading every day:

Point out traffic signs on the way to school.  Have your child pick out letters in the signs that are also in his or her name.  Have your child pick out words he or she knows from food labels as you make dinner.  These are just a few examples.  Think about other ways that you can incorporate reading in  your every day life.

Good readers need 5 key skills.
1.  Phonemic awareness:  Hearing and using the sounds that make up spoken words.
2.  Phonics:  Seeing relationships between sounds, written letters and groups of letters.
3.  Fluency:  Recognizing and reading words out loud easily.
4.  Vocabulary development:  Learning new words.
5.  Text comprehension:  Learning ways to understand, remember and share what they've read.
