Reading/Language Arts

We are learning our sounds using Zoophonics.  Each letter has an animal name, signal, and sound.  We practice these sounds each day.  At this point in time, your child should be able to tell you the correct sound for each letter.  We are starting to talk about the beginning sounds in words.  We are learning our sight words and making sentences out of the words.  We call these words popcorn words because they pop up all the time.  You may also notice we color those words yellow to represent butter on popcorn.  Please continue to practice these words each night.

Your child will begin bringing home booklets we are reading in class.  Please read these books with your child at least 2 times.  Touch each word as you read.  This teaches one-to-one correspondence (helps with math) and it helps your child keep place and not skip or make-up words when reading.  Point to the beginning word in the sentence and the ending word.  Point out periods, question marks, exclamation marks, and quotation marks.  Count the words on the page and the number of letters in a word.  It is difficult for many children to understand the difference in letters and words.  We work on these things each day when reading.  Already your child is reading!  Please continue to encourage and praise their efforts.

Writing

We will learn to write the capital and lowercase letters correctly.  At this time, we are concentrating on lowercase letters unless we are writing a person's name or beginning a sentence.  Please practice lowercase letters with your child.  Over 90% of all text (both read and written) use lowercase letters.  We are also learning to use the popcorn words to write words and sentences.  Each time we write, we illustrate with a drawing.  We are practicing putting details in both our person and our setting.  Please work with your child to add details when  drawing/coloring.

Math

We are continuing numbers 0-10.  We are recognizing, writing, counting objects, and learning different ways to represent those numbers.  We are working on patterning using AB and ABC patterns.

Social Studies

We are learning about fire safety the week of October 5.  Locke Fire Dept. will bring a firetruck and teach us more about fire safety.  October 12 is Columbus day and we will learn about Columbus.  We will also be going to Patterson Farm to the pumpkin patch later this month.  We will discuss seasons and the changes it causes in our daily activities.  Don't forget our Scarecrow Day.  We will be discussing the reason for scarecrows. We will also discuss Halloween and how different people celebrate.

Science

We will learn about different animals, their habitats and how the seasons affect animals.  We will continue to discuss fall and how we can use our 5 senses when describing the season of fall.

                    Special Classes

Tuesday - Music

Wednesday - PE

Thursday - Art

Friday - Library/Guidance -- 2nd Step

You are welcome to join us for lunch.  Our lunch time is 12:00.  Please sign in at the office and meet us at the cafeteria.  There are green picnic tables for our students to sit with their parents.  At times, the tables are crowded when we enter the cafeteria but quickly clear as the upper grades return to class. Please use these tables when eating with your child.  **If the tables are full, please sit next to the wall at the end of our regular tables.  Please do not sit in the middle so that the children without parents are separated from the rest of the class.
