Kindergarten Notes Mrs. Barringer Mrs. Bowden Welcome to our Kindergarten class. We are looking forward to a wonderful year. January In January we will learn about Jan Brett and read many of her books: The Hat, The Mitten, Annie & the Wild Animals, The Three Snow Bears and many more. Monday, January 16 - MLK, Jr. Holiday - no school Monday, January 23 - teacher workday - no school Homework see homework calendar for January homework Parents please assist your child but allow them to do their own work. Your child should be sounding out words they do not know. Letter of the Week January 30 - Bb, ch Word of the Week January 30 - from Word Family review word families Reading We will continue to work on Book & Print. Our most important skill at this time is recognizing the letter and giving the correct letter sound for each letter. We are learning how to say the sound of each letter in a word and blending those words together to read a new word. We will continue with new sight words. We will retell stories we read by talking about the beginning, middle, and end. Please read with your child each night and practice, practice, practice the sight words. We are using the sight words in our reading and writing. Your child must be able to recognize the sight words in order to find them in the room to put in his/her writing. It is important for your child to be able to read sight words quickly and be able to decode or blend unknown words while reading. We have worked on this 2nd quarter and will continue to practice daily. Continue to read the 4 books sent home on Monday that are due on Friday. Rereading known words helps with fluency or how quickly a child recognizes and reads words. Comprehension is a big part of 3rd and 4th quarter. Your child will be bringing home a Book Buddy bag. Inside you will find a book on his/her reading level that has been read at school. You will also find a card with the name of the book, date, and a place for a parent to initial that the book has been read. Before reading, have your child tell you about the book from memory. Then, read the book. After reading, close the book and have your child retell the story. You may have to help by asking "What happened first?". Most of the time, the child will begin with what happened at the end instead of the beginning. Talk about beginning, middle, and end. You may also use words like first, second, then, last, etc. Thank you for the time and support you give to your child to help them become successful. Phonemic Awareness We will review all letter sounds learned so far. We will continue to blend sounds to read words and we will change sounds to create new words. Writing In writing, we will continue learning the structure of a sentence focusing on a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence, spaces between words, and a period at the end. Students will be writing on their own using words they know or can find in the room and will be sounding out unknown words. When at home, help your child say a sentence, count the number of words, and then write each word. All sight words must be spelled correctly. Unknown words should be written with the sounds your child hears. Help your child say the word slowly so he/she can hear the sounds. Sight words (Also called popcorn words because they pop up all the time): I, a, see, my, the in, is, it, go, here, he, she, we, be, me, at, that, to, play, said, am, you, and, this, than, for, on, was, with, are, (read the color words: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, black, white, gray, pink) Math We are continuing with our study of both flat and solid shapes. We are also learning about ordinal numbers and fractions (halves). Whenever possible, ask your child to tell you the position of an object using ordinal numbers: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. Continue to count to 100 and help your child to recognize numbers 1-30. Science We will look at the changing weather and talk about the winter season. We are discussing polar animals and the differences in the habitat of polar animals and animals where we live. Social Studies We will continue rules and procedures and how they help make our classroom better. Practice saying your address and phone number. Practice tying your shoes! Special Classes Tuesday - Library/Guidance / Computer Lab Wednesday - Music / Second Step Thursday - PE Friday - Art You are welcome to join us for lunch. Our lunch time is 12:10. Please sign in at the office and meet us at the cafeteria. There are green picnic tables for our students to sit with their parents. At times, the tables are crowded when we enter the cafeteria but quickly clear as the upper grades return to class. Please use these tables when eating with your child. **If the tables are full, please sit next to the wall at the end of our regular tables. Please do not sit in the middle so the children without parents are not separated from the rest of the class.
